Unirea destroy Rangers Champions League hopes

Tue, 20 Oct 22:35:10 2009

GLASGOW (AFP) - Rangers Champions League hopes are all but over after two own goals and a missed penalty consigned them to a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Romanian minnows Unirea Urziceni at Ibrox.

The result, identical to the home defeat they suffered at the hands of Sevilla in their last game, leaves the Scottish champions firmly rooted to the bottom of Group G.

Rangers manager Walter Smith conceded that it had been a less than satisfactory evening.

"We, after getting off to a great start, didn't really impose ourselves on the game," said Smith.

"After that we lost three goals which at any level of football we shouldn't be losing. All-in-all it was a disappointing evening for us."

Unirea coach Dan Petrescu said he had to take immediate action after Rangers took the lead so early.

"I risked and we won. I don't believe we played the best game but in the second-half we had a bit of luck. I don't think it was easy for us," commented the former Romanian international great.

"I am happy but realistic. We have not qualified yet."

Things could have been so different for Smith's men who had a dream start when Pedro Mendes' shot deflected off Ricardo Gomes to give Rangers the lead after 80 seconds.

Rangers dominated possession but Unirea levelled with their first shot of the game when Marius Bilasco tapped in after 32 minutes before Steven Davis missed a penalty for the home side.

But a second-half collapse saw Petrescu's side stroll to victory with own goals from substitute Kyle Lafferty and Lee McCulloch before a Pablo Brandan free-kick finished the scoring.

Rangers were dealt a blow before kick-off when Madjid Bougherrra was ruled out with a knee injury leaving McCulloch to partner David Weir in the centre of defence.

Smith had said he wanted a strong start and his side duly delivered when a deflected Mendes strike gave Rangers the lead within 80 seconds.

Jerome Rothen floated a corner to the edge of the penalty box where Mendes took a touch before firing in a shot which took a wicked deflection off Gomes and looped over the head of stand-in keeper Daniel Tudor.

Rangers were dominating proceedings and Petrescu was quick to make a tactical change with Marius Onofras replacing Epaminonda Nicu.

Almost immediately a half-cleared corner presented Unirea with a chance when the ball fell to Tiberiu Balan 10 yards out but he sliced his volley wide.

Kenny Miller and Sasa Papac combined well on the left to allow the Bosnian to send a low cross into the box which Steven Naismith could only get the slightest of touches on as it trundled wide.

Unirea levelled things in the 33rd minute. A quickly taken free-kick was played to Brandan who skipped past Steven Whittaker to send a low ball across the face of goal for Bilasco to tap in.

Rangers were handed the chance to regain the lead five minutes later when they were awarded a penalty after David Weir's header from a Rothen cross hit the hand of Bruno Fernandes.

Davis stepped up but the Northern Irishman's soft effort low to the left was turned out for a corner by Tudor.

Things got worse for Rangers at the start of the second-half when Unirea took the lead in the 48th minute.

Fernandes' back-heel from Bilasco's corner glanced off substitute Lafferty to hit the post and go in with Allan McGregor helpless.

The home side's problems mounted in the 59th minute when Balan's curling free-kick from the left was headed past his own keeper by McCulloch for yet another own goal.

Rangers' misery was compounded just six minutes later when Rothen conceded a free-kick 30 yards out.

Iulian Apostol rolled it into the path of Argentine Brandan, who thumped a low, powerful drive past McGregor into the bottom left-hand corner of the net.

  1. Unirea Urziceni is one of hundreds of clubs you'll see over the next few years giving trouble to teams with established names. Eastern Europe's new robber barons are generous spenders who shoot for all those who'd warm the bench at the likes of Real and Inter. Occasionally they'll hit the right combination and could have a good run for several years. This year Rubin Kazan, CFR Cluj, and Unirea might even make it to the elimination round of the Champions League. I doubt the Rangers can keep up the pace if they don't start hiring professionals with an eye to spot these "second tier stars" (most of these players are found in South America and Africa).
That being said, Scottish football also suffers from chronic romanticism both on the field (the myth of "the valiant fighter who could") and off the field (the myth that alcohol affects you not much different than water).

  2. sorry but I have to say my word and I really dont appreciate what ppl say about Unirea beeing a small club. If I'm not wrong, Nothingam Forest came from the 2nd league to premier league, winn it, then win champions league, all that in four years(i belive that's the story). Whould anybody belive it then? i think not. But ,like nothingam f., unirea came from the 3rd division to the 2nd and then won League 1, all in 3 years. And it was possible because of Dan Petrescu(Super Dany), who once took part at the glorious Steaua Bucharest winning years as a great midfielder; who was a fabulous player for chelsea too, now raised a club so high nobody can belive it. I'm not saying Unirea will win CL, just that it's amazing how they progressed and now they hope to have a European spring(thats how we call it. it means if they qualify to Champions league or Europa league playoffs)
so please, dont say about unirea that its a small club. if it was, how was the win possible? how did they win? out of luck? sorry mates, but in football there is never luck or bad luck. its only skill, potential and a lot of heart.
oh and by the way. it isnt a rangers defeat, its a unirea win

  3. Rangers, how the hell can you lose your last two european games at Ibrox 4-1! Sevilla are a brilliant team but has anyone in the world (Excluding Romania) heard of Unirea Usiceni. A total embarassment for Scottish football. So on you go Celtic and Rangers, go ahead and join the English Prem. I will be the one who gets a season ticket to Ibrox to see Rangers get humiliated even more than they already are. I kinda feel sorry for Gareth Southgate, though. If your team was 4th in the Championship and only a point of the top, would you sack your manager.

    No.

If your team had lost your last two Champions League games at home 4-1, would you sack your manager.

    Yes.

A star signing to get for Rangers would be Sunderland's Star striker Beach Ball. When you see it's vital positioning at key moments in the game, it makes you appreciate how advanced the game of football is (if you are not Rangers or Celtic).
