Jankovic avenges New York defeat

Eurosport - Tue, 20 Oct 19:26:00 2009

Champion Jelena Jankovic avenged one of her most painful losses this year when she beat Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova 6-4 5-7 6-1 in the first round of the Kremlin Cup.

Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, returns a shot to Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan during the Kremlin Cup tennis tournament in Moscow, Russia - 0

Russian-born Kazakh Shvedova stunned the former world number one in the second round of the US Open last month but the Serbian was in no mood to surrender a second time.

"I knew what to expect from her," the world number nine said. "At the US Open she played a match of her life while I was at my lowest level - my grandmother died on that day.

"I knew she could serve well and hit the ball well but today I played better," added Jankovic, who is battling with Russia's Vera Zvonareva and Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska for the last remaining spot at next week's season-ending tournament in Doha.

After splitting the first two sets, second-seeded Jankovic raced through the decider to seal the win and will face Czech Lucie Safarova for a place in the quarter-finals.

World number seven Zvonareva, who trails Jankovic by five points in the race to Doha, crushed Romania's Ioana Raluca Olaru 6-2 6-2 in the last match on centre court, while Radwanska meets Russia's Maria Kirilenko in the first-round action on Wednesday.

  1. Good for her to get this win but geez can Jankovic ever learn to accept defeat and give her opponent the credit!!!

Her grandmother died on that day!!! While this is sad news to hear and I am sorry for her I just can't help but think this is classic Jankovic speaking. She loses a match and the excuses never stops!!!

As I've suggested in (free-on-the-web) verse, females should play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the racket/bat arm.

  10. Nice one. I remember this time last year when she had a 3 tournament winning streak this among. Shame she has had a bad season, but at least she won some nice titles and hopefully can go out with a bang by winning this aswell. Her injury worries me though x
