Devin Setoguchi scored two goals and an assist for the Sharks. Patrick Marleau added a goal and two assists.

"It was a great win for us," said Ryan Vesce, who gave the Sharks a 6-2 lead to start the third period.

Twice the Sharks scored after Rangers penalties, including Setoguchi's first goal which put San Jose up 4-2.

"We played a good team and they capitalised on the mistakes we made," New York's Ryan Callahan said. "I don't think we were battling hard enough ... And I think the penalties really hurt us."

Chris Drury and Michael Del Zotto scored first-period goals for the Rangers, who had not lost since their opening game.

San Jose scored the next six goals before Enver Lisin collected New York's third tally with two minutes 48 seconds left.

Marleau added the final San Jose goal a minute later. Both he and Setoguchi have now scored seven goals and Dany Heatley six in the young season.

Five of San Jose's goals came against Rangers backup netminder Steve Valiquette, who played the first two periods and stopped 13 of 18 shots before Henrik Lundqvist finished up the final period, saving 10 of 12 attempts.

Evgeni Nabokov played the entire game in goal for San Jose, stopping 26 of 29 shots.

Brad Staubitz and Heatley wiped out the Rangers' early lead, with Heatley levelling the score at 2-2 on a power play with 1:48 left in the first.

Jed Ortmeyer put the Sharks in front in the first 79 seconds of the second and Setoguchi followed with two goals 11 minutes apart.
