Premier League - Paper Round: The robot returns

Eurosport - Tue, 20 Oct 08:21:00 2009

Jose Reina was distracted by the beachball, the mystery texter is unmasked and Peter Crouch limbers up for a stint on Strictly Come Dancing.

Reina has admitted the obvious, that he was distracted by the red beachball on Saturday. Darren Bent showed his billiards skills by playing a cannon off the red to send his shot into the net. EXCLUSIVE screams The Sun: 'I was distracted by the red ball' says Reina, who actually gave the interview to a Spanish radio station.

It's undoubtedly a big week for Rafa Benitez with Lyon and Manchester United lying in wait and Ian Wright states in his column in The Sun that Liverpool's season could be over come Sunday afternoon.

Crouch may have consigned the robot to the back of the wardrobe, but he seems to have some other moves up his sleeve. I'm not sure the shapes he was throwing in Movida in the early hours of Sunday would save him from the axe in Strictly, but I've got to say he looks a far better mover than Jonathan Woodgate. See for yourself by checking out the link under the photo and let us know your thoughts.

The Daily Telegraph's Henry Winter is a respected scribe among the press corps and his assertion that it is time for Benitez to summon up the passion that runs through Anfield holds water. However, his suggestion that the FA are wrong to pick on Sir Alex Ferguson just does not stand up.

Winter claims that rather than carpet Ferguson for his comments about referee Alan Wiley, the FA should be targeting Liam Ridgewell for his challenge on Theo Walcott, or looking into why all England games are played at Wembley rather than taken around the country.

Winter's comments on the Ridgewell tackle and England games have merit, but it is wrong to suggest that the Ferguson issue should be swept under the carpet. The next time the 'respect the ref' issue rears its head, we'll ask Winter for his views.

The Independent have got the story that others could not: they claim to have unmasked the secret texter - it's a shame The Sun are also claiming to be just as quick on the draw.

The News of the World said on Sunday that a mystery player had incurred the wrath of Fabio Capello for using his phone during an England meal break - something that is strictly forbidden under the Capello regime. The NOTW did not name the player, but he has been unmasked in both the Independent and The Sun and the player in question is none other than Emile Heskey.

  4. As a spurs fan the embarasing pictures every couple of weeks of another player Pissed up and falling out a night club is getting beyond a joke... they Obviously think as per usual we are top of the league and so will finish in the top 4... Harry has to let these lads know the hard way, im sure other clubs have players out on the lash too but they manage to keep there heads down, Woody is suppost to be injured he wants to worry about winning his place back... sort them out harry or we could have another Mid table season.. COYS

  5. Why are the press questioning Ridgewell's tackle on Walcott? Just cos walcott is a potential England world cup player does not mean you cant tackle him! Plus ridgewell's tackle was a very strong but fair one. He won the ball clean and caught theo in the follow through. Are you not allowed to tackle in football anymore? BTW, i'm not a blues fan, just think a fair tackle should be accepted even if a player gets injured in the process.

  6. Just when you think Spurs and there players are being serious about winning things and getting into the top four you get another story regarding disipline or lack of it. Beating the team at the bottom of the league is hardly a reason to be out clubbing at two in the morning, when are these players going to grow up and act as adults !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

  7. So a scouser throws a ballon on the pitch, this is just a childish bit of fun, but then week after week we see how childish the Liverpool fans are so whats new ?
It's only because this has backfired that all the fuss has blown up had the balloon finished up at the other end with the same results, I bet the silence apart from the scouse laghter would have been deaferning.

  8. why is it whenever a referee is challenged, the fa always go after the manager.................They get paid alot of money now and seem to think they are as important as the players..............................
If a player made a mistake he gets slaugtered by everyone, but he man's up and gets over it. But when the little snivelling toad in black, yellow or wotever fecks up the fa pull ranks and turn it around by going after whoever questions his authoritie!!

  9. Mr. Henry Winter, we should forget Ferguson's rap on a match official. If it was a foreign manager like Benitez and Wenger, your ink will be flowing, full of justifications why they should be sanctioned. It's time again, to be objective on issues no matter the nationality. What Mr. Ferguson did is an embarrassment to his profession. He is a bad loser. The appropriate punishment must be meted out on him to discourage younger managers. I don't think he is above the law, as your are insinuating!

    thanks

  11. Maybe was the Arabian curse which cause liverpool losed. The red balloon was the first curse from the Arabian since takeover.

  12. When will footballers learn, eh? The photo of Crouch and Woodgate is completely crazy and no doubt will be the cause of some slagging in the Spurs training camp but it does make them look like drunken idiots which in turn brings the club in to disrepute.

Heskey can do better than to shut his mouth about looking elsewhere for a club. If the rules are there that people shouldn't text during a meal break, then he certainly isn't doing his England chances any good by falling afoul of Capello!
