Stoke defender Robert Huth has accepted a Football Association charge of violent conduct and apologised for his challenge on West Ham United's Matthew Upson.

Upson was left in a heap in the penalty box when jockeying for position at a free-kick and replays showed him striking the West Ham defender.

The FA reviewed the footage and hit the former Middlesbrough man with a violent conduct charge.

Stoke have issued a statement saying the player accepts the charge, but the club were keen to stress that the incident was out of character for the defender.

"Stoke City Football Club and Robert Huth accept the FA charge of violent conduct and would like to apologise for the incident at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday," read a statement on the club's official webite.

"All players were briefed at the beginning of the season about obstructing opponents at set-plays and Robert reacted in frustration at being impeded by Matthew Upson for the second time in the game, stopping him from marking James Tomkins at set-pieces as instructed.

"Robert Huth's actions are totally out of character for a fully committed defender who has only received one red card, for two cautions, in nearly eight years of playing in the Premier League.

"We await the FA verdict on the incident."

  1. comment 1, if someone walked up to you in the street and spanked you one in the face, hard enough for stiches, that person would be libel for prosecution, so why should it be any different here eh? and as for him blocking!? so what, grow up! do you assult people who happen to get in your way? Huth deserves everything he gets.

  3. Dirty filthy thug. If the FA dont come down @#$% him the Germans will think they can get away with anything and before you know it they'll be invading Poland again, and who wants all that again? Certainly not the Polish. Ban him for life.

Also, why aren't the police presssing charges for unprovoked assault?

FA once again dodging the issue and only mouthing that they want to clean up the game!

  7. So what he whacked the guy who was clearly blocking him, Football has turned into a fairy sport with players rolling around the floor holding their faces when someone stands on their foot or limping off for 3weeks for bruised shins,These boys get paid more than enough to take a bit of rough game now and again. If the players were briefed about blocking players from marking at set pieces then what is the FA gona do to Upson.
