Mowbray defends players

Tue, 20 Oct 15:52:21 2009

Tony Mowbray dismissed any notion of the Celtic players letting him and the fans down after the Hoops surrendered their lead at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League to Old Firm rivals Rangers by failing to break down Motherwell in a 0-0 draw.

Rangers' win at St Johnstone earlier in the day had taken the Ibrox side two points clear, but Mowbray's side failed to respond as they missed a series of chances in a frustrating afternoon at Celtic Park.

"Let's put it into perspective. It is the first time we haven't scored in the league this season and we had lots and lots of chances," said Mowbray.

"I defy anybody to say there was a lack of determination, desire or effort in the way we went about our job.

"I must congratulate Motherwell on the way they played. But I was looking at statistics, we had 24 shots on goal and 15 on target, so not scoring is the frustration.

"If we had scored two of our 15 efforts on goal we would have said `job done, let's move on to next week.'

"Most weeks, with those stats, you would be sure that you would score one or two goals."

Hoops' wide-man Niall McGinn played down the impact of losing the lead at the top of the table to their Ibrox rivals.

"It is disappointing but it's early enough in the season. It won't come down to Old Firm games, us and Rangers will drop points against other teams," said McGinn.

"We are playing well enough at the moment and if we had scored in the first half it could have been two or three nil."

  7. I don't blame Mogga....I blame the squad
Caldwell's only interested in top pay; Loovens only came to Celtic to play in the Champions League and without that he cannae be bothered; McMannus looks like he's several years past it; N'Guemo may have flattered to decieve, and we only got three weeks worth of play out of fortune! I wish we could go back to the time when men wanted to play for Celtic just for the joy of wearing the hoops, but now players are only interested in playing in the Champions League (so they can be seen by an even bigger club) or making as much money they can squeeze out of the club without putting in any real effort!

  10. frankiethebear, can i just point out that Celtic dropped 21 points from january to May last season when Strachan was in charge, so it's just carried on from there, these players aren't good enough, the manager must sort it now, your right about that.

  11. sorry john, but throwing a couple of bananas on the park in a bygone day when there weren't many coloureds around never mind playing for major clubs in Scotland can hardly be on a par with going on the rampage after winning the cup winners cup, and im not even going to mention the manchester incident as i feel that was the english media blowing a rather small incident way out of proportion to the amount of fans there, your always having a pop at Celtic, that is a sure sign of insecurity, and you have at least two names so must also be a gemini, or just a two faced @#$%.

  14. Get it together Celtic, you look like a fecking pub team! How does McGeady look so great against Italy. but looks like he cannae be bothered against Motherwell?

    From seaniebhoy163, on Mon 19 Oct 2:07PM
  15. tony's right, the players never let him or the fans down, they're just mince, i've said it before and i'll say it again, McGeady, MacDonald and Maloney are terrible, all huff and puff and no end product, and can anyone point to a footballer at Celtic? there used to be Tommy Burns, Paul McStay and the like, now it's Scott Brown, the guy is a headless chicken, same as the forwards, why has it taken the media and the fans all these years to see that.

From inverkenny, on Mon 19 Oct 1:35PM

MY ONLY COMMENT THIS MORNING IS MOWBRAY MUST GO NOW BEFORE HE PUTS CELTIC IN A POSION THEY WILL TAKE YEARS TO RECOVER FROM

From John, on Mon 19 Oct 12:05PM
  18. no doubts cwltic deserve all the criticism they get. they have no organisation, no heart, no desire to win and no spirit. WE NEED TO SORT THIS OUT NOW! the way we are playing is a disgrace. if mowbray cant fix this he needs to do the honourable thing whilst there is still time to salvage somethi ng from this season domestically as europe has gone. keep the abuse coming Huns, its the only way things will improve.
i could pick a pub team to beat this lot at the moment and i put it all at the feet of tony mowbray.
    sort it or go.
