Nolan demands boardroom backing

Newcastle midfielder Kevin Nolan has warned owner Mike Ashley the squad needs to be strengthened in January if the club is to maintain its promotion push.

The Magpies slipped from the top of the Coca-Cola Championship table on Saturday evening, albeit on goals scored, after a 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest enabled West Brom to overhaul them.

"We need to strengthen. We have been saying this for a long, long time and it seems to have fallen on deaf ears," Nolan told the Journal.

The Toony Army faced Forest with key defenders Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini back in the treatment room on Tyneside and with little prospect of returning for the trip to Scunthorpe.

Loan signings Zurab Khizanishvili and specialist full-back Danny Simpson lined up in central defence as caretaker boss Chris Hughton found his resources once again stretched to the limit.

That is a situation Nolan believes cannot continue if the club is to sustain a serious challenge for a swift return to the Barclays Premier League.

"We need to strengthen the squad if we are going to give ourselves the best chance of going up. It's a paper-thin squad and a couple of injuries kill us. It can't be allowed to happen and it is frustrating to have to keep saying it," he added.

  3. WHY DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE ASHLEY REGIME BY SPENDING MONEY AT THE GROUND ON BEER, DRINKS AND FOOD? SHAME ON EVERY FOOL WHO CONTINUES TO ADD TO ASHLEY'S REVENUE STREAM. WHEN YOUR SON / DAUGHTER ASKS YOU TOO BUY THEM A BURGER OR WHATEVER, SAY NO - SORRY, AND TELL THEM WHY. BECAUSE YOU ARE UNHAPPY WITH THE REGIME, AND BECAUSE THE TEAM IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GRACE NEWCASTLE UNITED.

PLEASE. STOP GIVING ASHLEY YOUR MONEY. IT MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE ! IF ASHLEY STOPS MAKING A PROFIT, HE'LL BE OFF. NO MORE GEORDIE CASH FOR ASHLEY

  5. The toon are gaan into recession. Off to a good start as usual , then downhill for the middle part of the season , no doubt followed by a last minute rally to save them from whatever . The all too familiar pattern. What does it take to get the 'accountant' /owner removed and somebody with some intelligence and passion for the game, substituted. Early days yet but its the wrong time to be sliding down the table. Ashleys got far more money than he will ever be able to spend ,so why not spend some of it honouring a committment to the club and the people of Newcastle.

  8. On paper the club is worth 100 million to Mr Ashley, who, on paper, is worth almost a billion quid but unfortunatley football matches are not played on paper they are played on grass over a long season during which injuries are inevitable. Once again having a good squad, on paper, is bugger all use if it isn't good enough to put 11 best players on grass for each match. Scunthorpe on Tuesday. We often wonder who put the c**t in Scunthorpe, we definitely know who the c**t is at NUFC!!
