Rooney wants to make own mark

Macclesfield striker John Rooney is determined to shake off the tag of being the brother of England star Wayne.

The 18-year-old scored a stunning volley in Friday's win at Cheltenham, providing further evidence of the improvement he has made this season.

Although his brother is known throughout the game, John is keen to make his own mark rather than ride on his back.

"I want to carve out my own career," he told Macclesfield's official website. "I want to have people knowing me for my own achievements and what I have done in football.

"If I can keep scoring goals like the one on Friday, perhaps people will be calling him (Wayne) `John's brother' before too long."

John Rooney has the potential to be in the Premiership. Perhaps Everton could offer us 10 big ones now before a big club snaps him up.
