Int Football - Bellamy hands Wales victory

Eurosport - Thu, 20 Nov 10:19:00 2008

Craig Bellamy gave John Toshack's young Welsh side a 1-0 victory over Denmark with an impressive display in Brondby.

2008 Wales Craig Bellamy - 0

The West Ham striker (pictured, right) swooped on 76 minutes after Gareth Bale's reverse ball found him with enough time and space to pick his spot and shoot from distance into the bottom left corner.

Debutant Aaron Ramsey impressed in a side whose average age was 21. The Arsenal teenager's central midfield partner, Jack Collison of West Ham, also performed admirably on a night that bodes well for the future of Welsh football.

After weathering a strong Danish start, Wales created the game's first clear openings.

On seven minutes, a clever Craig Bellamy dummy supplied Ched Evans, but his left-foot strike was deflected wide by Anders Rasmussen.

Bellamy could have put Wales ahead five minutes later. He latched on to Bale's long ball, out-pace the Danish right-back Kasper Bogelund, but scuffed his shot with Evans in acres of space to his right.

On 21 minutes another ball over the top found Evans. But the ball did not fall for the Manchester City striker and the Danish defence cleared as he attempted to round goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

Michael Krohn-Delhi and Morten Nordstrand both failed to convert for the hosts mid-way through the first-half before Bellamy again showed his blistering pace but Sorensen blocked his shot with his legs.

Evans was twice fed by Bellamy in great positions before the interval but saw his first effort blocked by a desperate lunge from Rasmussen and then failed to make a decent connection when just two yards out moments later.

Danish substitute Soren Larsen made an instant impact after the break as he hit a sweet left-foot shot from distance that flashed past Boaz Myhill's goal, and he then forced the Hull City keeper to parry; Leon Andreason was unable to control on the rebound and shot over.

The game sprung into life with Bellamy's goal, and Myhill was forced to make an outstanding save before a last-minute corner from the Danes deflected back off the woodwork.
