Int Football - Managers: Capello delight

Eurosport - Thu, 20 Nov 14:04:00 2008

Managerial reaction from the home nations and Republic of Ireland after their friendly matches, with England boss Fabio Capello delighted at his side's performance against Germany.

2008 Germany-England Joachim Loew Fabio Capello - 0

Germany 1-2 England

Fabio Capello: "The result is important but the performance was very, very good. We created a lot of chances, we played with confidence and personality. To play here, like this, is not easy. I don't like to speak about one player, but all the players played well and it the spirit they showed is very important. I am very happy to have this selection problem! We have time to decide when we pick the next squad: we have two months to wait but I am very happy because I saw some players play very, very well."

Joachim Loew: "We had a bad day and deserved to lose. Only in the second half did we get into the game a bit, but we have huge problems with positioning, in our organisation and in the build-up play. You can see clearly that England were stronger. We did not have the maturity today to beat these opponents."

Scotland 0-1 Argentina

George Burley: "It was definitely a worthwhile exercise and a great workout for our players. We were playing against one of the best teams in the world and Holland are also a top-10 team. It was good for our players to play against Carlos Tevez and other top names just as it was good for me when I played against Diego here in 1979."

Diego Maradona: "Who is he? Who is (Terry) Butcher? I greeted the Scotland manager after the game. Who is Butcher? Since the bad news I've had about my daughter [who suffered a pregnancy scare], it's the first time I've managed to laugh."

Denmark 0-1 Wales

John Toshack: "If you are not going to go out and play friendlies with the right attitude there is no point in having them. We have come here without important players who would normally be first choices, and it was really pleasing to see how the team worked."

Northern Ireland 0-2 Hungary

Nigel Worthington: "It was hugely disappointing, very poor - there was a lack of energy, a lack of imagination from my team. It was 40 minutes before we put four passes together. It was simply not good enough and highlighted where a lot of our players are in terms of not playing for their clubs. They looked awful and that comes from their personal situations. If you are not fit, then you are going to be second best."

Republic of Ireland 2-3 Poland

Giovanni Trapattoni: "Normally after a defeat, I am sad and not happy, but this evening, I am not sad because I saw from some players that we can believe in the future. I said this team (Poland) are strong and have played together for a long time. But we had some great chances with Damien Duff and we kept believing we could score and for me, that's positive. I said to the players in the dressing room afterwards that it is better to lose a friendly that a World Cup qualifier."

  5. How dare Maradona accuse England of 'cheating' in 1966 ! Geoff Hurst's controversial goal was an honest shot with the right foot which hit the underside of the bar, it was not punched in with the hand - which is the only way Maradona could have scored his goal in that incident, no way could he have got his head to the ball. He also implied that we only won because of this dubious goal - did he not see Geoff's final goal which would have made the score 3-2 anyway ? Or did he think that was a cheated goal as well ?

So Fabio bought last nights team with him from Italy then did he?
Don't talk such rubbish man. You know I would never dream of going onto an Italian site just to insult the Italian people. Why do you enjoy insulting the English so much then?

  8. Well i dont like Maradonna, but at least he is and Argentian running his national side, we are supposed to be one of the biggest national football countries with an Italian running the natinal side. If it wasn't fot fabio the Italian then England would still be in the dumps.

  9. Yup well done the boys. I bet Iam Wright nearly had a heart attack last night, what a great shot by his lad. I don't know if you all saw it but the german goalie actually saved that shot - phenomenal football.
There were so many good points in that match and with an average age of 11 that's gotta be good for the future.
And as for that cheating argie....

  10. I have no ax to grind about Maradona. I'm not English (Welsh) and have no affinity with the English football team. However, I would like to say this! There are cheats in football like all sports but there is only one thing worse than a cheat and that's an arrogant cheat! Maradona, although admittedly extremely gifted as a footballer was, and probably still is, the most arrogant human being that I have seen associated with football. "Guess" is absolutely right - Maradona isn't in the same league as Pele who over a much longer period and more consistently proved his greatness on the football pitch. In fact, I am of the opinion that he was extremely over-rated. Butcher is right not to want to demean himself by acknowledging Maradona. As a wholehearted sportsman, Butcher wouldn't want to lower his standards to shake hands with such a person and I commend him for not doing that.

  11. To end my tirade let's get the important stuff done.
    Well done England and Fabio.

  12. The Scotland result was great to see. To think that the only thing the scottish supporters have had to celebrate in 20 years was a cheating coke-head scoring a handled goal against England. Man that was worth the entrance fee all on it's own.
Watch a bunch of sad losers the jocks are.

But do they all say it was the hand of god or do they cough for it?

  17. Maradonna was the best player that ever lived, regardless of the problems in his later life and obviously the handball thing. You cannot deny his all round wizardry, talent and skill. Everyone makes mistakes in life.

From Mike, on Thu 20 Nov 12:13PM
  18. All footballers cheat or try to con the ref to gain an unfair advantage. Maradona cheated, sure but why is it worse than diving in the box to get a penalty? Butcher should get a life and move on - everybody else has.

From Anglo, on Thu 20 Nov 11:51AM
  19. Maradona will never be judged as the greatest player ever. That title goes to Pele. A couple of good reasons why:
    1. The greatest player never cheats and scores with his hand.
    2. The greatest player doesn't cheat and use drugs.

A great player will never do those two things above. Only someone who is not sure of his ability, skill and talent will do those 2 things I mentioned above.

  20. Good old Toshack, well done Wales and well done too England as well. Shame about Scotland and Ireland, but as Trapattoni says, at least they weren't qualifiers.
