Interim Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear has admitted he hopes to win a deal with the Magpies until the end of the season.
Kinnear was brought in by Magpies owner Mike Ashley on a temporary basis following the shock departure of Kevin Keegan in September.
The former Nottingham Forest boss initially joined Newcastle on a one-month deal, which was then extended until the end of November as the club continue to look for new owners.
Kinnear is due to meet Ashley after this weekend's game with Chelsea to find out how the sale of the club is progressing and he is planning to discuss his future with the Magpies owner.
The Irishman has revealed he has drawn up a list of targets he wants to buy and players he wants to sell in the January transfer window, if he is still in charge.
"I'm looking forward to the meeting because I think everyone would like some clarification regarding the takeover situation," Kinnear told The Journal.
"Hopefully I'll hear how far down the line the sale of the club is and if there is going to be any significant progress in the next couple of weeks. As far as I know due diligence has started, or is about to start, but I'm not in contact with Keith Harris directly so I don't know.
"This meeting will give me the chance to find out what is going on and what my situation is going to be.
"If the sale isn't as far down the line as we thought then I think it is only right I ask for a contract until the end of the season.
"I know why Mike doesn't want to give me a two or a three-year contract, and I understand that. If I'm on a long-term contract it could jeopardise the sale and I don't want to do that.
"The most important thing is the club, not my personal situation, but I think it is in the best interests of the team if I am given some long-term authority with a contract until June or something like that. It will clear up a bit of the uncertainty.
"If the club isn't going to be sold before the end of the year - and it's not certain that it is - then I'm also going to give the board a list of players I want to sign and list of players I'm willing to sell in January."

thats very unfair TONY K , i happen to like rats..
Give the bloke a chance, he arrived at the club shrouded in a terrible atmosphere. he has made the most of what little he has at newcastle. Considering the initial outlook for the Toon, i reckon things will only get better. Do your stuff Joe. H'away the lads.
Keep at it Joe. Newcastle have bee a joke for too long. As they said on Talk Sport this morning, the only people who think Newcastle is a 'big' club are the Newcastle fans. You can make them 'big' again.
i think he should stay least he wants the job more than the rest hovering about they all have a lot to answer for and keegan is in the bunch
he found a sick and lame dog. It was limping around on two legs instead of four, even its tail had been circumsized. Now you have a dog that can run 10 meters, wag its bum, and even eat a decent meal. It isnt jumping over fences yet, but the way the treatment is going it wont fall down into a lesser category like Spurs.
If Ashley isnt planning on making any more investment in players then surely Wise no longer needs to "search Europe for talent" and therefore no longer needs to pick up his massive salary
Joe Kinnear was in a no lose situation, who else was going to take it on,nobody. He's come in and done a good job up to now, a couple of tricky fixtures and some decisions that could have gone our way, but thats football.
I think its only fair that for the managers, players and fans sake we're given some sort of stability, even if it is just until the season ends, at least its a platform of some kind.
.
Yesterday's news. The club doesn't just need a permanent manager, it needs an overhaul of the boardroom and a lot of investment. This season doesn't feel any worse than last season when that know Allerdyce was leading us back to the same place he picked Bolton up from. Say what you like about Ashley, but at least he got rid of Allerdyce. I say Kinnear should stay on until the end of the season and be given a budget for the January window. I hope Ashley uses some common sense in his future dealings with Newcastle.
comments 1 to 3 are definately fair enough remarks, it just stinks that he was basically given the job by that f.ucking little rat wise who should never have been working for the club in the first place
We may as well keep him; he's done a good job considering.
This is a truly useless squad of players he has; if he manages to stave off relegation then he deserves the job for life and the Freedom of the City! Personally, i think we are doomed.
keep hiom to the end of the season, and see what happens after that. Can`t blame him for the injuries and an awful season. But the players have to do better.....
couldnt be any worse than the ones we have had i suppose, as llong as the players respect him he has a chance.
