Eighteen-year-old Kim shot 1,387 points to beat his team mate Oh Jin-hyek's 144 arrow outdoor recurve record of 1,386, which was set at Ulsan on home soil in September 2009.

"I really didn't think I could break the world record set by Oh Jin-hyek but breaking it was always my wish," Kim said.

"The wind is not so strong today, and I did not feel nervous at all, so I achieved a good result.

"I feel so good now and am confident of winning the coming matches. I will do better."

Qualifying for the men's individual archery events at the Asian Games follows the competition format at the world championships, where archers shoot from distances between 30 to 90 metres.

Recurve is the only Olympic archery discipline.

"That's a pity, but he is my cherished junior, so it is okay," Oh, who qualified second with 1,366 points, said of losing the record.

"Everyone makes mistakes in competition."

The men's individual archery medals will be decided on Wednesday.
