Ferrari: Massa better than Hamilton

Eurosport - Sat, 20 Dec 00:09:00 2008

Ferrari would not swap Brazilian driver Felipe Massa for McLaren's Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, president Luca di Montezemolo has said.

FORMULA 1 Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa 2008 - 0

Hamilton, 23, who became the youngest world title-winner after he edged Massa by snatching fifth place on the final bend of November's season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix, said last week that he would never leave McLaren.

"Hamilton is a great driver, capable of coming close to the world title in his first year in Formula One and winning it in the second," Montezemolo told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "But with all respect, I wouldn't swap him for Felipe Massa.

"If Massa did not win it this year, we (the team) were to blame. It would have been normal for him to win. He didn't manage to because of our mistakes."

Montezemolo added that there would have been an exodus from F1 if proposals for a standard engine had been approved.

The plan was not included in cost-cutting measures approved last week to help the sport after the global economic crisis led to Honda's withdrawal.

"If the standard engine had gone through for all teams, at least four or five carmakers would have abandoned (F1)," he said. "I mean four or five plus Ferrari, i.e. all of them."

  3. SCOTTISH C, why all the appoligies from toyota, idiot, how many drivers have said glock tried hard. one, fernando, who was taking the michael.SCOTTISH C, , most drivers are proffesional they can live with it, they allways say a person who allways keeps on about a thing ,allways thinks someone is guilty.

  4. SlimJ it is completely wrong, immoral and corrupt to offer Ferrari money to stay.
Why don´t they offer Honda more money also, McLaren, Williams, Renault etc, all this nonsense of Ferrari not being favoured has crumbled before our very eyes.

  5. The plot thickens here's something from the BBC website.

"Mosley said our board was full of people not well informed," Di Montezemolo told the Guardian.
"Well there is on our board the vice-chairman of the FIA, Marco Piccinini, a member of the [FIA] world council, [former Ferrari team boss] Jean Todt, Mr Piero Ferrari [son of Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari] and myself.

So two members of Ferrari's board are also in the FIA. the phrase conflict of interests springs to mind.

  7. SlimJ.

Here is the full quote from GP update site, I'm sure more will come out shortly.

"Ecclestone explained: "They were the only team that broke ranks with the other manufacturers - why did they break ranks? That's where the $80 million comes in. We 'bought' Ferrari. We 'bought' Ferrari's loyalty. Our deal with Ferrari was that we 'bought' them so they would not go to the others."

I didn't say it was illegal, just wrong.

Anything that Ferrari win in the future ( and presumably in the recent past too) will always have the question hanging over it, how much help did they get from FOM/FIA.?

Also I just love the attempts to justify this,
"I'ts all Bernies fault, he takes more than us."
"We are the oldest F1 team, we are special"
Or the really thick ones that don't understand and say
"Why shouldn't we get prize money for winning the constructors championship."
I sincerely hope that there is no F1 Championship next year as the other teams break away and sort out their own independent fair & open series, with the income divided fairly so that all the teams have a chance not just Spanky and Grumpys "Hoes"

  8. Have also posted this in another story but feel it's worth repeating.

    .

At last someone has posted an onboard camera shot of Glock on the last lap at Brazil.

Touron and the other Glock conspiracy theorists, please pop along to youtube and paste this into the search bar.

Anyone who watches that and still thinks Glock wasn't on the ragged edge, might want to paste this into youtube.

  11. These guys are the best in the world and they know Glock raced hard & fair. The nutters, halfwits, clowns and loons are all on here ranting & raving, foaming at the mouth, howling at the moon. Not 1 driver, ex driver, journalist or pundit has come out and said they thought the Glock pass was dodgy.

  13. Which is why the Glock thing is such a nonsense, all the drivers would walk away from F1 if they thought Glock was paid to slow down and let Hamilton win.

  14. These are the best drivers in the world and they would all rather walk away from a sport that was fixed than be tarnished by the corruption.

  15. Unlike those who think Glock cheated, I don't buy into the conspiracies.

I'm quite sure Bernie has thrown this revelation into the media purely to deflect the attention away from him and how much money he takes from the sport. Ferrari have only won 1 of the last 4 drivers titles, if they are getting special treatment, it's clearly not enough to overcome the obvious talent from the likes of Alonso & Hamilton. You might be able to buy dodgy stewarding decisions, but you can't buy titles.

From Scottish C, on Sun 21 Dec 1:08AM
  16. Anyone can give money to anyone else, but if the commercial rights holder or management of a sport give money in secret to a competitior that participates in their sport, and we see some hugely controversial decisions go in their favour. Controversial decisions made by the commercial rights holder & the governing body of the sport, like the stewarding decisions this year, the Stepneygate affair, Renault's ban on it's mass damper and scrappijng of launch control, etc, etc, etc. The viewing audience has every right to look suspiciously and with deep cynicism at those decisions.

From Scottish C, on Sun 21 Dec 1:08AM
  17. SlimJ, just the fact that it was secret payments, which continued long after any talk of a breakaway series by the manufacturers was dropped makes it dubious.

Can you imagine if we found out that Man Utd were getting secret payments from the FA of £54 million a year, because they were a team with a rich history and had a special glamour that the likes of Hull or Everton or Bolton don't have.

  20. Ha ha Murky S,
If he cheated why is he still champion?
Why hasn't the FIA and Ferrari done something about it??
If there really is a conspiracy why isn't it in all the papers worldwide??
Do you have any really constructive answers?
    No, I doubt it.
Anyway it must be your bed time, so off you go.
