Northampton defender Brett Johnson believes he has done enough to earn a new long-term contract at Sixfields. The 22-year-old looked set to leave the club at the turn of the year when his six-month contract expired after more than two months in the wilderness but was recalled unexpectedly for the win at Huddersfield at the end of December.
He was handed a one-month deal by manager Stuart Gray and has excelled ever since, keeping his place at the heart of the Cobblers defence.
He said: "Stuart Gray said to me last summer that if I could prove my fitness he'd give me a chance and that is what has happened.
"I've had to work hard but I think I'm improving every game.
"My contract is up at the end of the month but hopefully I've done enough for that to be extended."
