Rene wants number one jersey

Mon 21 Jan, 12:00 PM

Walsall goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin is ready to stake his claim for the number one jersey after returning from a loan spell at Hednesford. The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season with the non-league side after recovering from a knee injury and is now looking to challenge Clayton Ince for a regular place in Richard Money's side after back-up keeper Bertrand Bossu suffered a shoulder injury in training last week.

"I am delighted to be back in the fold," Gilmartin told the club's official website. "I didn't want to be out on loan for the whole season and although Clayton Ince is having a great season, it will benefit the team as a whole if I am pushing him and Bertrand Bossu for a place.

"It was important to get a few games under my belt at Hednesford and get my confidence back after being out injured and I have got that match practice now.

"Last season was a bit of a nightmare with the injuries, but now I am back and all three of us will be fighting for that number one shirt."
