Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner brought Swansea back down to earth as Sunderland returned to winning ways.
Benin international Sessegnon fired the Black Cats ahead in stunning fashion with 14 minutes gone, and substitute Gardner made sure of the three points with an equally adept finish five minutes from time.
Martin O'Neill's men were forced to defend for long periods, particularly before the break, as the visitors attempted to build on last weekend's Barclays Premier League victory over Arsenal.
However, they were unable to make the pressure count when they were in the ascendancy and the home side saw out time relatively comfortably to the delight of the bulk of a crowd of 36,904.
Sessegnon cut inside from the left and after exchanging passes with James McClean, curled a deft right-foot shot across keeper Michel Vorm and high into the top corner.
Gardner then wrapped up the points with a fine volley from outside the area five minutes from time.

Ian stop whinging,you hypocrite !!!
stats
territorial
sunderland 55%
swansea 45%
yes swansea had 69% possession but clearly mostly in their own half!
when you are losing what is the point in that?
Ian
Ofcourse you can argue the stats especially when they are totally wrong !!!!! Just like the penalty that was given when Duff fell over in to the box, never a penalty in a million years!!! Imagine how you lot would be now screaming had that game benn for the championship title or for a relegation battle to keep you up?? Now can you understand where i am coming from with the poor standard of officials we have in charge of the games ??? The sooner technology catches these guys out the better is all i can say. In situations like that afew sexcconds for an official in the stand to watch a reply could save a clubs future !!!!!
SCUMCASTLEIAN A WIN IS A WIN see the mighty mags fcuked it up 5ewcas2le ha ha ha ha ha p/s where's jonny sperm bag crying in the tyne sad mags ftm
Ian,parking the bus my r-se,Swansea pass the ball well but we were too good for them and scored 2 great goals, unlike a poor mag team who defended like a pub team. Get over it man !!
malcy, cant argue with the stats mate, parking the bus and all that.
cracking good result i dont know which game this reprter has watched but we arent made to defend for long periods of time at all Swansea had about 15 mins of dominance in the second halkf but that was it ?????
