Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill reiterated his desire to keep hold of Craig Gardner after the homesick midfielder sealed victory over Swansea in stunning style.
Gardner's 85th-minute volley extended the lead Stephane Sessegnon's fine 14th-minute finish had given the Black Cats and killed off any hope of a comeback by the Swans.
The former Aston Villa and Birmingham player, who was introduced as a 78th-minute replacement for David Vaughan, has been linked with a move back to the midlands this month after struggling to settle on Wearside following his £5million summer move.
However, O'Neill is ever more keen for him to stay.
He said: "We want him to stay at the football club. At this moment, there has been no concrete offer.
"There is interest from other Premier League teams in and around that area, but there has been nothing concrete and we wouldn't want him to be leaving. I have not thought about an immediate replacement at this moment, so time is running out. We want him to stay."

From Byker Ian?
Ah , that explains a lot....
Malcy,if it is pure speculation and paper talk(your words)then why has o'neill publicly stated that he want's to keep him,if nothing had been said by gardner then surely o'neill wouldn't have had to come out with that statement, beside's i cant see sunderland getting anywhere near the money they paid for him.
all pure speculation and paper talk, he is a good player who is just fuind ing his feet at safc because he wasnt used very much by the previoous management team, goes to show and prove when Vaughn Gardiner and larsson all played together against Stoke , we biltzed them. Few games after gardiner wasnt played niether was Vaughn and we plumetted, now they are being used and played in the correct positions we are climbing slowly and surely becoming a hard team to beat as seen at Chlesea.
where's jonny the gob shi*e ha ha ha ha ha ha FTM
Hahahaha, Tony K and Jonny, you are so funny, really funny comments as always. Of course the truth of the matter is that we got 3 points yesterday and you didn't. You had twice the number of points we did a few weeks back and now you only have 9 more. Seems we are catching up, won't be long before we are above you again. Never mind though, you two will still be funny, I laugh at you both all the time.
Paul (#16) he picked up an illness over Christmas /New Year period and was out for a couple of games. He was back on the bench for the FA cup game as he is now over it. Mignolet was first choice up until his facial injury so MON is letting him have a run in the team as he has seen what KW can do. No other reasons mate.
Ian (10), To the likes of you and me there's a huge gulf between Mackems and Geordies. To the rest of the world, sadly, there's no difference.
Nazi, 15, good one, like it, very funny ha ha ha!!!
Paul mc,i think it's because he's not very good.
Charlie, Scott, Malcolm D etc. Do any of you know the (real) reason why Westwood is not playing right now? Illness, injury or something else. No mention at all on club site!
Ian ,5, was it one of the hairy bykers Jonny was shagging ??
Scott,i dont think many sunderland player's past and present who have resided in newcastle have found it to be the pits.
ian i live 10 mile away from sunderland but as a delivery driver i no wat im on about !!! both have poverty stricken areas but cmon newcastle is the pits lol ftm
Scott, judging by that little(and illiterate)rant,i take it your a pennyweller?.
at least jonny can giv us a laugh you have a go at pennywell ?????????? hold on lets think byker, benwell, scotswood.oh and lets forget the shitest place to live in the northern hemespere cowgate only a couple i thought you should no about because you obviously not from the scum they call newcastle???? total idiot FTM
charlie,i take it you never mentioned you were a mackem then.
Ian, you remind me of the dozens of Jocks I met on foreign shores who, with a wistful tear in their eye, banged on about how wonderful Scotland was (go and live there, then). Aye, Newcastle and Scotland are great places to come FROM.
Ian, you can live in a mansion but if you've got shyte neighbours....
Can you imagine leaving a run down area like Birmingham where gun crime is rife and where illegal immigrants flock. A lot of estates are no go areas with murder, rape and drug crimes are some of the highest in the country. Can you imagine leaving all of that behind only to find yourself in Penywell???
It must have been a real shock to the system for Craig but sometimes it really is better the devil you know!!!!
charlie, think i'd do the salt mine's as opposed to living in sunderland.
