Eagles boss may give Fonte deal

Thu 21 Feb, 08:45 PM

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock could hand Jose Fonte a permanent deal at the end of the season, while Jeff Hughes is in no rush to leave. The 24-year-old defender Fonte, currently on loan from Benfica, was brought to Selhurst Park by former boss Peter Taylor.

And despite only managing 12 appearances this season due to the form of Mark Hudson and Matt Lawrence, Warnock is still considering offering him a long-term contract.

"I certainly would not be against bringing him here on a permanent basis and certainly will not rule out that option when his loan period ends. It's a definite possibility for us," Warnock told the Advertiser.

Palace defender Hughes, meanwhile, claims he is in no rush to leave Selhurst Park despite playing very little football for the Eagles this season.

The 22-year-old left-back was sent out on loan to Peterborough and after impressing posh Darren Ferguson he looked set for a permanent switch to London Road.

But Hughes failed to agree to personal terms and then looked set to move to Bristol Rovers before that too collapsed.

"I'm in no rush to leave the club, if I leave it's because I'm not required, not because I'm looking for a move away," said Hughes.

"I'm going to keep talking the manager and see what happens, but what happens with me is down to him.

"If I'm told I'm not needed then I will have to find another club."
