Tunnicliffe prepared to bide time

Thu 21 Feb, 05:15 PM

Stockport teenager James Tunnicliffe has set his sights on becoming a regular at Edgeley Park after committing himself to the club. The 19-year-old centre-back, who turned down a move to Southampton last March, this week signed a deal to keep him at County until the summer of 2009.

Tunnicliffe believes the club can win promotion to League One this season but admits it may not be until next term that he secures a regular first-team berth.

He said: "There's a lot of competition for places at the minute.

"We've got Ashley Williams, who's always going to be the first name on the teamsheet, Gareth Owen and Jim McNulty, who has done well since he came here.

"I know that I'm at the back of the pecking order but I'm waiting for my chance and if it doesn't come this season then hopefully I'll be a regular next year."
