Arsenal Hit By Toure Blow

Thu 21 Feb, 08:10 AM

Arsenal's bid to become the first English team to beat AC Milan at the San Siro have been hit by the loss of Kolo Toure for at least three weeks.

Toure limped off in the seventh minute of Wednesday night's 0-0 Champions League draw with a calf problem sustained when he blocked a shot by Pato.

The loss of yet another player to the treatment room compounded a frustrating night for the Gunners who failed to capitalise on their dominance at the Emirates.

Emmanuel Adebayor missed a sitter in the dying moments while Emmanuel Eboue, Cesc Fabregas, Nicklas Bendtner and Eduardo also wasted chances.

They head to Italy for the last-16 second leg in two weeks' time seeking to break the defending champions' stranglehold over English opposition on home soil.

But Arsenal know what it takes to triumph at the San Siro after thumping Milan's city rivals Inter at the same venue 5-1 in 2003.

And Wenger is confident his team can reach the quarter-finals after making the Italian giants look vulnerable.

The Gunners boss said: "It promises to be a very interesting game in the second leg.

"We didn't concede a goal against them but didn't finish the chances we created because we were a bit too forceful with our final ball.

"Milan defended with a lot of experience and adapted to the situation very well.

"We had plenty of chances but were a bit nervous and when we took shots we didn't test the keeper enough.

"I feel we can still progress because we can play at a high tempo for 90 minutes.

"Milan will have to come out for the second leg. They didn't create any chances tonight while defensively we were very good.

"Overall, 0-0 at home isn't bad. I didn't dream of that scoreline but to not concede a goal is not bad.

"Milan will start as favourites in the San Siro but we can deal with that."

Arsenal must travel to Milan without Toure, who alongside Jens Lehmann is one of only two survivors from the starting line-up that thrashed Inter five years ago.

And Wenger left little doubt over what he blamed for Toure's injury with the Ivorian having recently returned from the African Nations Cup.

He said: "Kolo has a calf injury and from what I can see he will be out for at least three to four weeks.

"The injury was a consequence of the African Nations Cup."

Milan are in commanding position for the second leg but coach Carlo Ancelotti refused to write off the Barclays Premier League leaders.

He said: "Qualification is still in doubt. We are not yet safe for the return match.

"We're not sure of going through because Arsenal have shown great quality and we know they can do it in the return."
