Chesterfield boss Lee Richardson has signed Sunderland pair Peter Hartley and David Dowson on month-long loan deals.

Defender Hartley and striker Dowson, both 19, will go straight into Richardson's squad for the League Two visit of Brentford.

The Spireites boss said: "We are grateful to Sunderland manager Roy Keane for loaning out these two players as they will help to provide some healthy competition in the squad."

Meanwhile, Richardson revealed that attempts remain ongoing to bring an experienced central defender to Saltergate.

"We are determined to get our man, but trying to supplement the squad of a League Two side can be frustrating," he said.
