Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing have announced that Dutch driver Robert Doornbos will join the team for the 2009 IndyCar season.
Doornbos raced in Formula One with Minardi and Red Bull before moving to Champ Car with Minardi Team USA in 2007. Most recently Doornbos competed in the China and New Zealand rounds of the 2008/2009 A1GP series.
"I'm very happy and proud to get this chance to race with Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing,” said Doornbos. “The history of the team and the big success they have had in the past really attracted me and it makes me proud to become part of this winning team. Racing on the ovals should be very exciting."
"It will be tough, but I'm training as much as possible and am in good condition and ready to achieve results," he continued. "I’m also excited to race in the legendary Indy 500. I'm looking forward to the first race."
The first test of the season takes place at Homestead-Miami Speedway next week and will mark his first oval test.

Robert Doornbos wasn't wealthy enough to buy into a Formula One, seat, then.
Part of being a racing driver is raising sponsorship capital. If Robert can bring the cash so NHL can run more cars, then so be it. I don't think it's at the expense of anyone since NHL would only run a single car without the "pay to play" drivers participation. At least Doornbos is a competitive driver with a lot of experience.
Only got the ride because of $$$. At the expense of Justin Wilson. Newman-Haas has just become a pay and ride team - Paul Newman must be spinning in his grave. They are even after Milka Duno! :(
