Ramirez on top at Ruta del Sol
Andalucia rider Javier Ramirez won stage one of the Ruta del Sol.
The 33-year-old was in a 195km long breakaway with Luis Angel Mate (Cofidis), William Routley (Spidertech) and Daniel Dominguez (Team NSP - Ghost) on the stage from Zahara de los Atunes to Benalmadena.
The trio escaped after three kilometres of racing with Ramirez beating Mate and Routley to the line with the peloton closing in behind.
The quartet had built up a maximum lead of 11:30 but the peloton absorbed Domínguez in the final stages with Oscar Freire leading the main bunch over the line, a mere three seconds behind Ramirez.
Patrick Gretsch (Project 1T4I) retains the overall race lead after Sunday's prologue victory.
