Roberto Donadoni will name his Italy squad for Wednesday's friendly with Spain on Saturday, knowing he may not be in the job after Euro 2008.Donadoni's current two-year contract expires after the championships in Austria and Switzerland and negotiations over an extension have been put on hold until the tournament has finished.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) said in a statement their relationship with Donadoni is "based on trust and respect which goes well beyond contractual aspects".
The statement continued: "FIGC and Donadoni agree to maintain an atmosphere of responsibility and calm around the national team - something that Donadoni has guaranteed since his first day as head coach of the Azzurri.
"We will talk about the contract when it expires in July."
The announcement sparked a reaction from AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti, who said that he is "glad to be linked" with the national post.
Ancelotti said Donadoni deserves to stay beyond Euro 2008 but indicated he would be interested after the 2010 World Cup.
"I am glad that my name is linked with the national side because it is good to be spoken about. But for now it's impossible," Ancelotti told Corriere dello Sport.
"Donadoni must be allowed to manage at the European Championships in peace and go to the World Cup.
"I could only coach the national team after 2010."
Donadoni remained calm in the face of ongoing speculation.
"It hasn't affected my position," he told Rai Tre.
"Signing (a new contract) after the summer's events isn't a problem."
The coach is currently preoccupied with the selection of 23 players who will face Spain in Elche.
Antonio Cassano has served three of a five-game suspension after his tantrum against Torino, but Donadoni has not closed the door on the 25-year-old.
"He must smooth out his character and perform more consistently," Donadoni told the Italian Football Federation's official website. "We can't do anything, it's all up to him.
"He has grown up and he has to learn that certain things need to stop. Every now and again he sees red and makes mistakes.
"After the latest episode I gave him some time to cool down and then we spoke and he immediately told me he had been a cretin - he used that exact word."
Alessandro Del Piero is also seeking a recall following his impressive Serie A form.
The 33-year-old was left out for the friendly against Portugal on February 6 and responded by striking a sublime free-kick to win the clash against Roma.
Genoa forward Marco Borriello made his debut against Portugal and Cristiano Lucarelli rejoined Parma in the January transfer window in an attempt to earn a recall so both will be looking to give the coach attacking options.
Donadoni will not yet be able to pick Palermo's Brazilian-born striker Amauri.
The 27-year-old has not been capped by Brazil and will receive an Italian passport at the end of April after living there for five years, though the debate rages on as to whether he should be selected for Euro 2008.
Bianconeri goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will return after injury forced him to miss the Portugal clash, while AC Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso also returns from his spell on the sidelines.
