Title race hots up in Holland

Fri 21 Mar, 11:15 AM

PSV Eindhoven coach Sef Vergoossen insists the title race is far from over as he prepares to welcome FC Groningen on Saturday. The Eredivisie table toppers lead Ajax by four points after the showdown between the pair ended goalless on Wednesday.

But with five matches still to play, Vergoossen believes his side's chances of taking the title for the fourth year on the trot are still very much in the balance.

"The championship race is not over," he said. "We are in a good position, but it is not decided yet. There are still five games to go.

"I thought we could win the game after the break. We knew chances would be far and few between, with so much at stake for both teams.

"We were really keen to take all three points, but did not put in a very convincing display in a physical game."

FC Groningen slipped out of the top four last weekend and they will be keen to pull of a shock result in Eindhoven and boost their bid to finish in the Champions League play-off places.

Ajax will be hoping they do so as the second-placed side face a tricky trip on Sunday to FC Twente, who have been beaten just twice at home this season.

Seventh-placed Twente have also only lost one of their past six games and held Ajax to a credible draw when they travelled to Amsterdam in December.

Feyenoord will be looking for the top two to slip up as they hope to revive their title challenge on Sunday.

A win at 14th-placed Sparta coupled with a Twente victory would see them draw level with Ajax on points.

Willem II will be hoping to take advantage of Heracles Almelo's dreadful home record as they bid to lift themselves away from danger at the bottom of the Eredivisie - the 13th-placed side have won just two matches on their travels.

Elsewhere on Sunday, NEC Nijmegen travel to VVV Venlo looking for the three points that could lift them into the top half of the table.

With VVV and Willem II sitting immediately above them in the Eredivisie, rock-bottom Excelsior know that a win against FC Utrecht on Saturday would lift them temporarily off bottom spot.

Saturday's other games sees AZ Alkmaar host De Graafschap and Roda JC travel to Heerenveen, while Vitesse Arnhem take on NAC Breda on Friday evening.
