Trezeguet accepts France snub

Fri 21 Mar, 03:30 PM

David Trezeguet has all but given up hope of playing for France again after being left out of coach Raymond Domenech's latest squad. The 30-year-old is Juve's top scorer in Serie A this season with 16 goals in 27 appearances, but has not featured for Les Bleus since the 1-0 defeat to Scotland in a Euro 2008 qualifier in September.

"In a squad it's important to feel the manager's faith in you and I don't feel that in the national team," Trezeguet told Juventus' official website.

"Mentally I'm already prepared to give it up. I'm not interested in being one of the reserves because I think I've shown I deserve more in my career.

"My personal revenge will be to do well at Juventus."

On Thurday Domenech selected 39 players for next week's international friendlies against Mali and England.

Manchester United striker Louis Saha later dropped out through injury but Trezeguet was again overlooked in favour of Recreativo Huelva forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle.

"Domenech made his choices and I'm not a part of this project for the European Championships, but I'm not distraught," said Trezeguet, who has won 70 international caps.

"I respect (Domenech's) choices, I'm concentrating on my club and I hope I can do well with them.

"In the France team there's a new core group of young players with just a few more experienced ones, and that's fine.

"It's quite clear I'm not part of the squad, but I'm ok with it."

Trezeguet scored the goal which won Euro 2000 for France and was also part of the 1998 World Cup-winning squad.

"I've won all I could win with the national team, so I'm happy," the Rouen-born striker said.

Marseille winger Mathieu Valbuena, one of the new crop of talent included in the squad, believes an unwavering self-belief has allowed him to make the step up from the third tier of French domestic football to the international stage in just 18 months.

The diminutive 23-year-old was plying his trade for Libourne-St Seurin in the Championnat National in 2006 but was one of five uncapped players to be called up on Thursday.

A strong performance on his debut could lead to Valbuena making Domenech's 23-man squad for this summer's European Championships.

The right-sided midfielder, one of OM's star performers this campaign, is still coming to terms with his progress over the past two seasons, but he maintains he has worked hard to get where he is.

"It is so flattering to be called up by France, to find myself playing with great players just one-and-a-half years after I was in the national league," he said.

"I have experienced some very painful moments at Marseille but I quickly learnt that talent is not enough. It is the mental side that makes the difference.

"I have had to be determined and believe in my goals while all the time keeping my feet on the ground.

"I have been rewarded for my performances for my club and that is very flattering.

"I don't mind which match I play in next week - the main thing is being called up."

Valbuena is likely to play in Tuesday's 'A' international against Mali rather than for the senior France team in the full international against England 24 hours later.

The same will probably apply to the four other newcomers - Stuttgart defender Mathieu Delpierre, Lyon utility man Mathieu Bodmer, Lille full-back Adil Rami and Sinama-Pongolle.

The former Liverpool striker has been in good form in the Primera Liga of late and wants to continue on the same path with France.

"I am enjoying a good spell at the moment," Sinama-Pongolle said.

"I have just scored five goals in six matches but I hope I'm not going to stop there."
