Southend Make Their Point

Fri 21 Mar, 11:09 PM

Hal Robson-Kanu's third goal in three games helped Southend rescue a point against leaders Swansea at Roots Hall.

Roberto Martinez's side had taken the lead in the 24th minute after Charlie Mulgrew fouled Thomas Butler inside the penalty area.

Jason Scotland sent Shrimpers' keeper Darryl Flahavan the wrong way with the resulting spot-kick to collect his 26th goal of the season.

But on-loan Reading striker Robson-Kanu equalised in the fifth minute of first-half injury time to give his side a share of the points.

Mulgrew made amends for his earlier mistake and delivered a dangerous free-kick into the Swansea penalty area which Robson-Kanu headed past goalkeeper Dorus De Vries.

Swansea's lead at the top was increased by a point though as second-placed Doncaster suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Yeovil.

Yeovil skipper Terry Skiverton headed home in the 22nd minute and Lloyd Owusu doubled the advantage in the 31st minute after a mistake by Rovers goalkeeper Neil Sullivan.

Paul Heffernan's 25-yard drive pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 73rd minute but Yeovil held on to take the points.

Elsewhere, Nathan Tyson hit a second-half winner from the penalty spot to earn 10-man Nottingham Forest their first win in five outings to put their promotion hopes back on track with a 2-1 triumph at Northampton.

Forest played much of the game with 10 men after the first-half dismissal of James Perch not long after Brett Ormerod's opener, and Poul Hubertz brought the play-off chasing Cobblers level only for Tyson to win it.
