James Beattie hopes to shake off his groin injury - Rob Hulse could continue up front alongside Billy Sharp if Beattie fails to make it. Stephen Quinn is back after suspension but fellow midfielders Chris Armstrong, who has undergone surgery to repair a groin tear, and Lee Martin (knee ligaments) are out.

Colchester captain Karl Duguid (knee) misses, while defenders Chris Coyne (hamstring) and Pat Baldwin (knee) are also training again but will be short of match-fitness. Striker Teddy Sheringham (foot) is another who is unlikely to be ready but full-back Phil Ifil's red card against Hull has been overturned.

Midfielder John Eustace is banned so Lee Williamson or Al Bangura should return to partner John-Joe O'Toole. Jay DeMerit started in the unfamiliar role of right-back against Stoke as Leigh Bromby continues his fine form alongside Danny Shittu and that should continue, with DeMerit captaining the side.

Richard Wright is set to play after signing a one-month loan deal from West Ham to ease a goalkeeping crisis which has seen all three of Saints' senior goalkeepers struck down. Kelvin Davis is close to returning following a dislocated finger, but Wright's arrival means he need not be risked unnecessarily, while back-up goalkeepers Bartosz Bialkowski (thumb) and Michael Poke (ankle) are still sidelined.
