Karun Chandhok of iSport International will start next to him on the grid in the first race on Saturday.

Grosjean, the Asia Series leader, is back on top form as he seeks a third win. After setting the pace in morning practice, the RDD driver was once again quickest during qualifying with a time of 1:44.182.

Chandhok was well over half-a-second behind him with a lap time of 1:44.965 as Adrian Valles secured third in his FMS International car.

Bruno Senna, second in the championship, will fight for a victory in Malaysia from fourth position.

"This is a fantastic result," Grosjean said. "This pole position was one of my goals this weekend. The second one is to win tomorrow on this beautiful track.

"I don't feel any extra pressure racing in front of the formula one paddock: I just keep focused on my objectives. This is still a learning period for me."

Chandhok was happy with a late surge that took him into second.

"I'm happy that I recorded my best lap in the very last minutes of the session," he said.

"Of course I was aiming for pole position, but I'm really happy with the car and the balance.

"Bruno Senna's time is also very good: we should both be really competitive tomorrow. I will definitely fight for the win."

Sebastien Buemi (Trust Team Arden) and Fairuz Fauzy (Super Nova Racing) are next on the grid.
