Champions League - Liverpool face Chelsea again

Eurosport - Sat, 21 Mar 12:13:00 2009

Liverpool will face Chelsea in the Champions League quarter-finals, the fifth consecutive season they have met in the competition.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Liverpool-Chelsea Anelka Carragher - 0

Liverpool have won two and Chelsea one of the clubs' recent battles in Europe, but the Blues won the most recent in last year's semi-finals.

Rafa Benitez's side won the 2004/05 semi-final, before the teams locked horns in the 2005/06 group stage. Liverpool then won the 2006/07 semi-final against Chelsea, who turned the tables under Avram Grant in last season's semis.

Holders Manchester United play Portuguese champions FC Porto, while Arsenal meet Villarreal of Spain.

Arsene Wenger's team beat the Spaniards in the 2006 last four before losing to Barca in the final.

If both Premier League clubs win those ties, they will face off in the last four - their first Champions League meeting.

The winners of the Liverpool-Chelsea tie will take on either Barcelona or Bayern Munich, with the pair meeting in the other quarter-final.

The quarter-final first legs will be played on April 7 or 8 with the return matches the following week. UEFA has said it will do all it can to avoid Liverpool playing on April 15 - the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Rafa Benitez's side, buoyed by the coach's contract renewal and a 4-1 win at United in the Premier League, will be at home for the first leg.

United lost to eventual winners Porto in 2004 when Jose Mourinho was the coach of the Portuguese side.

Alex Ferguson got his own back on his old nemesis last week when United knocked out Mourinho's Inter in the last 16.

The final will be played on Wednesday, May 27 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where there will be no home interest after Inter, Juventus and Roma were all eliminated in the last 16.

  12. 'And it wasn't a 'miss' by Shevchenko. It was a great double save by Jerzy Dudek. Shevchenko Shevchenko couldn't have hit it any better. Unfortunately for him, Dudek was equal to it.'

sorry, but you're not quite right... the first save is good, but if you actually watch the replay the second was hit straight at him and he didn't even move. somehow i think Shevchenko COULD have hit it better
as the commentator says, "the second one he doesn't know anything about it"

  13. Kieran edmondo,

You forgot to mention that AC Milan totally bottled it in the 2005 final when Liverpool tore them to pieces and Milan bottled it again during the penalty shootout. You don't get 'lucky' if you come back from 0-3 down.

And it wasn't a 'miss' by Shevchenko. It was a great double save by Jerzy Dudek. Shevchenko Shevchenko couldn't have hit it any better. Unfortunately for him, Dudek was equal to it.

By the way clever cloggs, the referee said that if he didn't give the goal for Liverpool in the semi against Chelsea then he would have sent Cech off and awarded a penalty too. Chelsea were lucky they weren't down to ten men. As it was, Chelsea got away with it and had 90 minutes to score just one goal to go through on away goals. They couldn't even do that. It wasn't the 'goal that never crossed the line' which put Chelsea out of the 2005 semi final. It was the fact that Chelsea didn't get an away goal at Anfield. They started that game needing a goal and that didn't change after the 'goal that never crossed the line'.

Dirk Kuyt wrongly had a goal disallowed in the 2007 semi final so it's about time Chelsea fans stopped bleating on like little lambs about how poorly they were treated in the 2005 semi. In the first leg Gudjonsen cheated and got Xabi Alonso suspended for the second leg. Chelsea were @#$% over the two games in the 2005 semi and didn't deserve to go through. It's as simple as that.

You have also forgotten the blatant penalty Liverpool should have been awarded in the second leg at Stamford Bridge last year in the semi too.

Seems to me that Chelsea have got the lucky breaks in ALL of the semis between the two teams.

  18. comment 882 i believe u r mistaken about arsenal not being a threat in the C.L to united because over the last couple of season and even this season when teams find it hard to even beat united arsenal seems to so i think u should take that back now!!!. Well i strong feeling that united and aresnal are going to meet in the semi final so all comments should held till after 90minutes has expired.
