Debut nightmare won't affect Martin

Mon 21 Apr, 09:00 PM

Rookie goalkeeper Chris Martin insists he will "look forward" to his next game in a Port Vale shirt, despite conceding six times on his debut. It was the Valiants' heaviest defeat in almost 25 years yet manager Lee Sinnott refused to hold the 17-year-old accountable.

But despite his disastrous debut, Martin revealed he remains undeterred as he bids to make a name for himself at Vale Park.

He told the Sentinel: "I thought I had a good game kicking wise and came for my crosses. You just want a bit of luck and think, 'what have I done wrong?'

"I will take the positives, I thought there were quite a lot for me, and I will just look forward to the next game.

"When the first one went in I just tried to keep my head. It was a test of character and I just tried to keep going, keep the defenders on their toes and not let my head go down. The manager said to keep my head up and that it was a tough debut for me."
