Tilson salutes Shrimpers energy

Mon 21 Apr, 09:00 PM

Manager Steve Tilson believes the boundless energy of his Southend side has been pivotal in their push for promotion back to the Championship. The Shrimpers have forged together a 13-game unbeaten streak to secure at least a play-off spot courtesy of a 2-1 victory at second-placed Carlisle last weekend.

Tilson's men are now in with a realistic chance of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking, either via the play-offs or with automatic promotion.

"We're really chuffed at the moment because it looked like at Christmas that we were going to be a mid-table side this year, but fair play to the players they've come on bundles and we've picked up some great results of late," Tilson said.

"I just think all over the park our energy has got us the results that we may not have got at the start if the season. We obviously try and play football, but we've got a lot of energy in the side."

With two games remaining - against Tranmere and relegated Port Vale - United could still mathematically overhaul Nottingham Forest, Doncaster and Carlisle and claim second place. Tilson added: "While it's still possible for us to get second place we've got to go for it. We're going to try and win the next two games but there is three teams above us and realistically it is unlikely."
