The Spaniard fell after his front wheel hit a half-buried stone and was thrown off his bike at 70km/h, suffering a knee injury.

Coma was able to finish the stage, but on returning to the Baia Mare base he was advised to quit and has been flown back to Barcelona for further medical tests.

Earlier in the day he was hit at low speed by a car at low speed before the stage had even got under way.

"Today wasn't our day," said Coma. "I had a very hard fall close to the end of the special.

"It was a hard fall, although I was able to get up, continue and finish the special. But I was hurt.

"I went back to Baia Mare to get assistance and tried to ride off to the day's second special, but I realised that I was really hurt.

"My knee started to swell and I couldn't bend it, so I had no other choice."
