Motorsport Power Rankings

2008 BSB Brands Hatch Shane Byrne, Airwaves Ducati - 0

The Power Rankings are our attempt to establish who is the best driver or rider across the wide world of motorsports.

We rate competitors from 13 different events - seven cars, six bikes - and pit them against each other based on their results.

See below for a full explanation of the system.

With the British Superbike championship finally under way, a first and a second place each for Shane Byrne and Cal Crutchlow sees them crash into the top five.

Otherwise there is no change after a quiet weekend, with Sebastien Loeb still on top. This weekend sees F1, World Superbike and WRC action so expect plenty of movement in the Power Rankings.

HOW IT WORKS

Drivers and riders can only score points by finishing on the podium.

Win = 10pts

Second = 6pts

Third = 3pts

Points are then divided by the number of races to leave an average score.

For Tier 1 events, the average is the final score.

For Tier 2 events, the average is multiplied by 0.8 to find the final score.

TIER 1 EVENTS: Formula 1, WRC, WTCC, Nascar, IRL, MotoGP, World Superbikes.

TIER 2 EVENTS: IRC, BTCC, 250cc, 125cc, World Supersport, British Superbikes.

Example: Jorge Lorenzo

1 x win, 1 x second, 1 x third = 10 + 6 + 3 = 19 points.

19/3 races = 6.3 average.
