Eurosport-Yahoo! blogger Danny Murphy defends Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson's controversial decision to field a young side for their FA Cup semi-final against Everton.
I was shocked to see the Manchester United line-up for the FA Cup semi-final against Everton.
Selections like these always bring up the debate on whether it shows a lack of respect to the opposition. Alex Ferguson did play a lot of the young lads, but I think if any manager has the right to make that decision then it's him.
This is because they have been so successful over the years and with their record we can't doubt that he sets out to win every competition they play in.
I think playing a team such as Everton, who are a strong side physically and have some good players, that maybe with hindsight he should have picked a stronger team as they are now out of the competition.
However, over the 90 minutes and extra time I thought that United were the stronger team and were quite unlucky to lose the game. I really don't think Ferguson was showing a lack of respect, it was just a time in the season when he thought it was ok to give some of his bigger names - who have been playing a lot - a rest, and it backfired.
Had they won on penalties I don't think there would be such media hype about him playing so many young players, but because they lost it has all been dramatised. If they now go on to win the Premier League and the Champions League I don't think many people who follow the club will mind.
Personally, if I was one of the big-name players he left out I would have been disappointed. Especially as it was a big game at Wembley, the semi-finals and the chance to win the Cup.
But I would also understand that with the amount of fixtures and the number of competitions that United are in, they are playing big games every week. When you play for big clubs like United, Liverpool or Chelsea then most of the players realise they won't be able to play in every single game.
Reaching the final is good news for Everton and it must have given them a confidence boost. I think they have done tremendously well this season both in the league and the FA Cup. They have some talented players, a really strong defence and a fantastic work ethic. They had to work very hard to keep minimising United's chances at Wembley and they did it so well. It really was a credit to them.
It's going to be a tough match but I think now they have beaten Manchester United they will feel that they can beat Chelsea too.
I am pleased that it is a different set-up for a Cup final. You get so used to seeing the Arsenals, Man Uniteds, Chelseas and Liverpools so it is interesting in that respect and great for Everton.
Even though I am a Liverpool fan, I know the Toffees also have fanatical support in Merseyside and all over the country. I am sure the fans will be ecstatic as it's been a long wait for them.

It was the wrong team to play its fact if he gave maybe 3 youngsters a chance ok but nearly the whole team were the acadamy it just shows how far Man Utd are ahead when it comes to the youth system i never see littlepool or chelski giving youth a chance that is why Man Utd will dominate for years to come take a look at littlepool can anyone name a youth player in his teens that has being playing for them this season i can think of one and he is not good el zoro littlepool should be called spainishpool muck and now chelski they only play old men.So in my opinon MAN UTD and ARSENAL will dominate english football for a long time.
4 man u fan yu cn lost meet spurs...hahahahahaha
they might have been the stronger team but they still lost HAHA
some may see it as a lack of respect but look at some results. spurs against shaktar got a draw (i think), sir alex didnt exactly play a bad side, if it were a league match, it would be a draw. i think danny has a point tho, if the manager wants to, he can...
well like yeh he does have a right to play young players...................WHEN HES PRETTY CONFIDENT HIS TEAM ARE GOING TO WIN THE GAME! right thats my small rant over
yeah, he focuses a bit too much on preventing Liverpool from winning the premier league that he doesn't care what he loses in the meantime. I agree that the young uns' held off an okay team of Everton's but against a better team like Liverpool or Chelsea they would have been sluaghtered.
Of course, repected Ferguson has all the right to use and give the chance to a second grade team as Wenger did some time back in certain cup matches.
But my qualm is that when he critices Benitez for the latter' remark on Everton, I'm just asking myself whether Mr. Ferguson is not acting same when sending on the field for a semi-final youngters against "small team Everton".
Your comments are most welcome.

yeah people forget that this 'young team' matched Everton for 120 minutes. They didn't lose because the team didn't play well during the game. It was just Everton's day and I think United could still have lost even with their strongest squad. You never know in cup games especially at this stage and Everton just seemed destined to get to final this year. As a neutral I was happy to see Everton win and really hope they beat Chelskis but I wouldn't fault Ferguson at all.
am abit sad manu lost the game against everton, but i still cant believe that everton senior players couldnt score a goal against the youngsters. that is to show that only on penalty kick they could only beat those youngsters. I admire SAF for playing the youngsters against one of the big club players. manu 4 ever.
for what i think, i alrdy expect fergie to play 2nd team. Due to champion n BPL pressure, this wo cup is more bigger than FA cup..n is more tougher to get to this stage. So i think for any of the manager will do the same thing to have their player rest. for a normal soccer street game any who play n rest only 3day con't for a year...any human leg will feel tired. N this is BPL is not a street soccer
MR MURPHY did not pay £35 for a ticket nor £25 to get there and £30 on beer , but if utd win the prem and champs lge the red army will not care two hoots
well it's sure lot better than parkers article.. gg :)
danny murphy must have watched a different game to the one i saw if he thought that M U were unlucky to loose i personaly thought it was the most boring semi final i have ever seen and i have seen a hell of a lot more than danny murphy has i have seen semi finals from the thirties and saturday's game the shots the goal keepers saved you could count for both sides on one hand and still have fingers left over
If a prem team play a non-league team in the FA Cup, it is expected that the prem team will not field their strongest 11. And so it follows that the better the opposition, the greater the risk of not fielding your strongest team. Whether its seen as a lack of respect or a calculated risk depends on the relative strengths of both sides. The Champions of Europe and the EPL, who are prioritising the defence of both of those titles ahead of the FA Cup, have every right to take calculated risks. Clearly, whether this was calculated risk or lack of respect, it didn't pay off.
SAF has at least invited accusations that he showed a lack of respect to Everton, the greatest domestic cup competition in sport and the travelling MU fans paying big money to see big players on a big occassion. All in the week after he slates Rafa for a lack of respect.
The point being, shut your mouth SAF.
i wud have rather played a 15 r 16 year old den berbatov because he couldnt bother his hole makin an effort for the best team in the world and for what he did for man united yesterday he shud be let go straight away!!!
DOES YOU DOES OR DOES YOU DONT SMOKE HASHEESH
Well done Danny Murphy! Its so refreshing to see an unbiased view from an ex Liverpool player or supporter(especially after listening to Jim Beglin's biased tripe on TV the other night)I agree that Man Utd looked the better team over the 120 min and if they had won the penalties, everyone would be singing SAF's praises. Weel done Everton though and hopefully they will win it and i say that with no disrespect to Chelsea intended.

If berbatov thinks he's better than macheda then he should stop thinking altogether. He's a top flop. Twenty eight years and not able to nick a penalty? After playing some farmer's role he thinks he's better than tim howard....he should be ashamed of himself and he should see more of the stands next season when campbel comes home.
