Super 14 - Australia threaten Super 14 exit

Eurosport - Tue, 21 Apr 08:45:00 2009

Australia are losing patience with South Africa's failure to commit to an expanded Super 14 competition and could elect to set up a new pan-Asian league.

John O'Neill - Australia - 0

"I think all the moving so far has been by Australia and New Zealand... And I think you get to the point where you can't move any more," Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill (pictured) said.

South Africa, New Zealand and Australian Rugby plans to invite a 15th team into the competition from 2011 have stalled over competing countries' demands that it come from their own turf.

Australia, which has only four teams to New Zealand and South Africa's five each, wants the extra team; but South Africa Rugby wants its soon-to-be-launched Eastern Cape franchise to be the 15th.

  1. Lets get it straight people, this is NOT about providing more ENTERTAINING Rugby
or even EXPANDING the competition ...
it is quite simply ABOUT MAKING MORE MONEY .....

    I totally agree with posts 2 & 3 ...
The SUPER 14 is THE PREMIER RUGBY Competition in World Rugby right now
But it will not stay that way if these idiots get there way
and/or it continues to serve up meaningless lopsided games
that only increase the possibilities of injuries to players

WE should find a way to exert more FAN POWER ..
Let these money hungry administrators and TV monguls know
WE ARE THE SUPPORTORS and without us they HAVE NOTHING !!!

otherwise we may soon have to put up with
the same type of idiotic advertising breaks
the Indian IPL Cricket administrators have foisted on their loyal public
all in the name of MONEYMAKING ...

Long live the SUPER 10 or 12 !!!
KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OUR RUGBY !!

  2. Instead of fighting amungst themselves they shoud increase the league to 16 and invite 2 Argintinian teams in preporation for their national team joining the Tri-nation series. I also agree with the previous comments, that there are at least 4/5 teams which are not good enough, this is because there are not enough good players in Australia or SA to make these teams competitive enough,

  3. The Super14 should be cut down to Super12 or even Super10 rather than expanding. There are too many non-competitive teams right now just making up the numbers and getting thrashed regularly. It is not fun to watch and if it keeps on like this, Super14 will lose more audiences. Another non-competitive team, whether from Australia or South Africa, will not make it more entertaining, it will kill it off for good.

  4. We cannot field even 4 decent teams nevermind 5 !! Let Australia put in one more. It will do rugby union good over there and it wioll further dilute their teams. Well, if SA did put in the EP team, at least the Cheetahs wont be last on the log :)
