Eurosport - Wed, 21 May 23:45:00 2008

Michael Ballack was our man-of-the-match in a predictably tight Champions League final; see how everyone else fared...

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Champions League Man United-Chelsea Manchester Ballack Scholes - 0

Chelsea

Cech - Fantastic double-save from Tevez and Carrick to keep Chelsea in the game in the first half. Kept his nerve to saved Ronaldo's penalty. 8

Essien - Picked above Belletti at right-back but he was given a rough ride by Ronaldo, who also rose above him at the back post to head United's opener. However, it was his scuffed shot that deflected into the path of Lampard for Chelsea's equaliser. 6

Terry - Looked as solid as ever, although was shown up for pace by Tevez on the break in the first half. Somehow deflected Giggs' goal-bound effort over the crossbar in extra-time, but the night was to end in bitter disappointment with his spot-kick slip. 8

Carvalho - Booked for an ugly lunge on Ronaldo just before the break, but solid otherwise. 7

A Cole - Showed no sign of the ankle injury he suffered in the final training session on Tuesday, and was rarely beaten by Rooney, although was unable to get forward in support of his team-mates. 6

Makelele - Booked for an early clash in the air with Scholes, and offered plenty of defensive stability although predictably nothing going forward as Chelsea pushed for a second after the break. 6

Ballack - Had a good chance with a free-kick on the edge of the box just before half-time, but curled his effort over the bar. Came into the game strongly after the break as he and Lampard took control of the midfield. Set up Lampard's effort off the crossbar in extra-time with a superbly-disguised pass. 8

Lampard - Was on hand to slot home from inside the box for Chelsea's equaliser and was a key player as Chelsea pushed hard in the second half. Hit the bar with a shot on-the-turn shortly into extra-time. 7

J Cole - Anonymous in the first half as United dominated possession, although he came to life a little as the game went on. Was involved in a long, tetchy tussle with Evra and came down with cramp in extra-time. 6

Molouda - Was unable to get into the game in the opening 45 minutes, although he came into it more after the break as Chelsea improved. Went down in the box with 15 minutes to go claiming a penalty for Ferdinand's challlenge, but his appeal was rightly rejected. 6

Drogba - Went down holding his back in the first half after landing awkwardly following a header, and made very little impact on the game until he struck the outside of the post with a curling effort from just outside the box with 10 minutes to play. Sent off for his part in an ugly scuffle at the end of the match, a little slap on Vidic. 5

Subs

Kalou - Brought on at the start of extra-time for Malouda, but did nothing to change the game. 5

Anelka - Came on in the first-half of extra-time, but barely touched the ball - until he stepped up to see his decisive penalty saved by Van der Sar. 5

Manchester United

Van der Sar - Great reaction save in the first-half when Ferdinand inadvertently headed towards his own goal, but crucially slipped to allow Lampard to get to the ball first to score the equaliser. However, the Dutchman was to end the hero when he guessed correctly to push away Anelka's weak penalty. 7

Brown - Curled in a superb left-foot cross for Ronaldo to head home United's 27th-minute opener and was very solid at the back, giving Malouda nothing to work with. 7

Ferdinand - Almost scored an own goal in the first half, but Van der Sar saved him. Booked for a body-check on Ballack on the edge of the box just before half-time, and had to be at his best in the second as Chelsea pressed for a second. 8

Vidic - One fantastic headed clearance from inside his own six-yard box at the start of the second half, and stood up to the test as Chelsea began to dominate. 7

Evra - Not given much of a test by Cole, although the two tangled off the ball on more than one occasion. Almost set-up Giggs for a winner in extra-time with a fine run and cut-back from the by-line. 7

Hargreaves - Pressed forward from the right-side of midfield and offered bundles of energy from the first to the last whistle, an important contribution considering Scholes palpably ran out of steam as the game wore on. 7

Carrick - Should have scored when Cech palmed Tevez's header into his path on the edge of the box, but he hit the follow-up straight at the Chelsea keeper. Failed to track Lampard's run into the box for Chelsea's equaliser and was unable to get on the ball enough to dictate play. 6

Scholes - Took a nasty knock on the nose in an aerial challenge with Makelele and failed to really dominate the match he was so deperate to feature in after missing the victory against Bayern Munich in 1999 through suspension. Subbed for Giggs. 6

Ronaldo - Head already impressed in the early stages, twice skinning Essien with typically skillful darts, before he ghosted in at the back post to head home Brown's cross for his 42nd goal of the season just before the half-hour. Faded badly in the second half as United came under pressure, and the night got worse when he stuttered and saw his rather weak penalty saved. 7

Rooney - One fantastic 60-yard pass to release Ronaldo down the right and a good low cross for Tevez in the first half, but otherwise struggled to impose himself on the match. Looked frustrated when he was brought off in extra-time. 6

Tevez - Had a great first-half chance, but headed Ronaldo's cross straight at Cech from close-range. Narrowly failed to get on the end of Rooney's low cross just before half-time. Less prominant in the second half, although he brought a save out of Cech in extra-time with an effort from the edge of the box. Worked so hard, right until the final whistle. 7

Subs

Giggs - Came on to break Bobby Charlton's appearance record in the 86th minute and might have won it for United 10 minutes into extra-time, although his effort was headed out for a corner. Kept his nerve to fire home a big-pressure penalty in the shoot-out. 6

Nani - Brought on for Rooney in extra-time, wasn't able to have an impact. 5
