Murray loses French warm-up

Eurosport - Thu, 21 May 13:29:00 2009

British number one Andy Murray suffered a narrow defeat to Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu in the Guinot-Mary Cohr exhibition event in Paris.

TENNIS Andrew Murray is annoyed during match against Rafael Nadal at Monte Carlo Masters. Murray lost to France's Paul-Henri Mathieu in a Paris warm-up tournament ahead of the French Open - 0

Murray, recently named world number three, lost 4-6 7-6(5) 8-10 (champions tie-break) at the Golf and Country Club as he prepares for next week's French Open at Roland Garros, also in the nation's capital.

In the opening set, play went with serve until Mathieu broke at 4-5.

Mathieu overcame two break points in the second before earning a match point of his own with Murray serving at 4-5.

But Murray survived and won the subsequent tie-break 7-5, which took the match to a champions tie-break.

"I arrived yesterday at 12 at night so the body was a bit stiff, but it was good to get some points on the clay and to get used to the weather, which is a bit better than at home," Scotland's Murray said on his website.

"It's just a bit stiff - I had a little problem the last couple of days so I didn't want to chase down every ball because I want to make sure I'm okay for next week."

  2. I watched the match and was amazed at the total lack of committment by this boy. He needs a new coach and a new outlook because this sort of tennis is unnaceptable

  8. "mais_siam, if you think Djokovic's and Nadal's reduction of time they take to serve would increase Murray's chances of winning a Slam and especially RG then you are absolutely clueless. If only a Slam could be won that way..."
uh, are you serious? What is this? Its so obvious. If djokovic and nadal has less chance to win a grand slam if they would follow the rules, who would then have more chance? Its SOO obvious, SOO obvious math, how can you get it so wrong?Disgustingly clueless.
Thats funny, so how do you think a grand slam is won?

  11. Post 52. What a load of @#$%! No modern Scot "despises" the English as you put it! The ancient comment from Murray about supporting "anyone but England" in the world cup is surely recognised as friendly banter by most folk south of the border. The phrase was hardly coined by Murray and anyone who holds it against him is utterly ignorant and clearly has absolutely no sporting background whatsoever! Have you never ever heard the joke about supporting your team and whoever is playing your rival team? I think it's more of a football thing but you would still support those players of your opposing team if they were selected in the national side. Sure I understand that in tennis you don't always support a player just because they are from the same country especially if you actually play the game but that's the same for any sport. This anti Scottish/ English @#$% is so out of date though, get over it!!!!

Murray has stated why he lost in the opening set; he was stiff, he was trying not to chase every ball preparing for next week french open.. this is tactical withdrawal instead of winning the match and going to next oponent..so why are we criticising this world no 3 british no 1? No need he did the perfect match by loosing to avoid $75,000 fine for withdrawal.. serena did the same in her opening game.. the difference between these two is that serena is an established winner of GS while murray is a pretender with his typical british excuseses ; wheather obstruction, bodily pain, lack of sleep, acclamatisation to the new environment and hotels food, all these affect british no1 world no 3..typical

  14. Give Murray a break will ya? Anyone here who could name a player with no bad days and unlikely losses? Even Federer at his peak lost some matches. BTW - I'm not British and so glad about it. All this useless @#$% about the best player in your own country...

  19. I'm not british but i love Andy Murray. But why can't these jealous british people specially english people accept that at present they have a very good tennis player like Andy Murray? He may be scottish but who cares? he represents britania, and britania will rule the world because of him! Come on guys he needs our support!

From marlon m, on Wed 20 May 10:39PM
  20. murray is just not ready yet to compete on clay. roger might have caught a break by having murray seeded 3 at RG since novak will present nadal with much more of a challenge on clay than murray would for roger.
