Stanback, who spent much of last season on injured reserve because of shoulder injuries, had surgery to repair a torn cartilage in his right knee. He injured the knee during off-season practice on Tuesday.

"I'm sorry for him but glad he's got the time," Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said on the team's official website. "He's so competitive but he'll get back."

Jones, speaking at the team's new stadium in Arlington, added that Stanback should be ready for the Cowboys training camp in San Antonio, starting on July 28.

A fourth round pick by Dallas in the 2007 draft, Stanback has been tipped to compete for the back-up receiver spot with Miles Austin and Sam Hurd.
