Goalkeeping errors were the order of the night as Shakhtar Donetsk lifted the last UEFA Cup with a 2-1 extra-time win over Werder Bremen in Istanbul.
An entertaining first half saw Shakhtar play better football and create more chances but a terrible mistake from Andriy Pyatov allowed Naldo to level Luiz Adriano's opener.
The second half was a turgid affair although proceedings opened up in extra-time, with Jadson's low shot - mishandled by Tim Wiese - enough to give the Ukrainian side a historic first European trophy.
All three goals were scored by Brazilians in a final where both sides came into the knockout stages after group stage exits in the Champions League.
A frantic opening by Shakhtar saw Adriano miss a sitter, putting wide after he was played through by Jadson on five minutes.
They took the lead on 25 minutes when Adriano atoned for his profligacy by deftly chipping over Wiese after Bremen let a harmless through ball from Razvan Rat bisect the defence.
Two minutes later Adriano missed again, this time firing over from just inside the area, and the German side levelled on 35 minutes after a soft free-kick saw defender Naldo smash a fierce shot straight at Pyatov, who fumbled the ball into his own net.
It was a dreadful error but the immediate response of his team-mates was to high-five their keeper, encouraging him to make several good stops later in the game.
Initially, though, it seemed that his Bremen counterpart Wiese would take all the plaudits after he denied Mariusz Lewandowski with a great low save to his right with four minutes of the half remaining.
Five minutes into the second half, the German international shot-stopper was called into action again, tipping away Dario Srna's free-kick for a corner.
What followed was poor from both sides, though, as legs seemed to tire and play was broken up by bitty foul after bitty foul.
With 11 minutes of normal time remaining, Pyatov went from zero to hero when he brilliantly dived low to the right to prevent Claudio Pizarro's downward header from giving Bremen a win they scarcely deserved.
The match petered out to extra-time, which Shakhtar came out for with the kind of urgency that saw them impress in the first half.
Srna quickly forced a good stop from Wiese with a long-range effort but the Bremen number one handed Shakhtar the win when, after a good low cross from Srna on the right wing came to Jadson, he let the low, weak finish slide through his grasp and into the back of the net.
In the latter stages Bremen went close twice, with Pizarro first denied a headed goal by a good Pyatov stop and then a last-gasp equaliser when he was correctly adjudged to have fouled impressive Shakhtar defender Dymytro Chygrynskiy before finishing from close range.
But despite their late efforts Bremen could not force penalties and Shakhtar became the first Ukrainian side to win the UEFA Cup.

Congrats Shakhtar, Congrats Donetsk, Congrats Ukraine!!!!!!!!!! Well done :-)
Another blind ref! As long as UEFA keeps on fixing games like the one yesterday purely due to political reasons (Euro 2012) football will suffer. Never mind diving players. A goal is a goal and a penalty is a penalty. When will UEFA introduce third ref's like in cricket or Rugby. But no, the loss of power would be far too great. Only if spectators would realise whats actually going on and stay away would Platini, Blatter and co get removed. But pigs will fly first!
Scottish C, do you watch the match you are commenting about?????????????
Chelsea vs Barca. If you watch that match, then you are unfair in your comment.
Uefa Cup for BRAZILIANS
Well done Shakhtar..
"it was about time a club from the east to win the uefa cup
From kirovrtanoski, on Thu 21 May 2:47AM"
Blimey does that mean St Petersberg is now moved from eatern europe than as they one it last year.
Did someone actually bother to watch this S H I T game HAHAHA
Next week United are going to crush Barcelona
EGK, you´re as dum as they come, writing out your fantasies like they make the slightest sence. Take a pill, relax and stop moaning about your chelski, they were lucky to have even come close to qualifying for the final against one of the best teams in the world like Barca. All they did was play destructive football and got way too far in the competion if u ask me. The ref will definately be in the world cup cause fifa know they need refs who do not break with idiotic crowd pressure.
Who cares? Champion's League Final is where it's at, come on UNITED!!!!!!
EGK, was that the same referee that sent off a Barcelona player when Anelka threw himself to the ground?
& what about the referee that didn't award Henry a stonewall penalty at the Nou Camp? Maybe Chelsea had bought him? After all when decisions go against you, it can't be an honest mistake, there must be corruption! Is that what you're suggesting?
Then again maybe if the likes of Anelka, Drogba & Ronaldo didn't throw themselves to the ground EVERY SINGLE TIME an opposing player is near them, maybe then they'd get believed when they are tripped or tugged in the box. I think it's great karma, for every penalty won by CHEATING early in the careers of these players, they are thought of more & more as a diver, & later in their careers they don't get the decisions, it all balances out.
Don't get me wrong, I like plenty of Chelsea players, & I'd have Cech, Lampard & Terry in my team of the best 11 players in the world, but the only reason they are out of the champions league is because they didn't try to score in the away match. They sat back playing for a goalless draw & thought they could do it at Stamford Bridge.
As it turned out, they weren't even good enough to beat a 10 man Barcelona side.
Away goals are everything in Europe, we know this in Scotland better than anyone. Away goals have decided the result in 35 games for Scottish teams until the end of the 2008 season, it's only gone in the favour of Scottish teams 7 times or only a 20% success rate. I looked up the stats, this is a fact.
If you can't or won't even try to score an away goal, then don't moan about it, you don't deserve to proceed.
If this referee doesn't officiate another match then that'd be 2 top class referees that Chelsea have succeeded in getting removed from the game in recent years. With that in mind I'd happily see them banned from Europe. It's one thing t
That is one in your eye Kiev! Never won anything as a Ukrainian team! You might have won the league - but you did not win Europe!
it shoul have been Man versus Chelsi final i agree
it was about time a club from the east to win the uefa cup
Well done Shakhtar! Well done brothers!
Beating Barsa 3:2 in Barcelona (in Champions league - Spain), Tottenham (UK), CSKA (Russia), Marseille (France), Werder (Germany) has to mean that the cup was not undeserved!
Next - Champions League! If Zervena Zvezd and Steaua can do it - why don't we?
For all those calling the super cup a Barca vs Shakhtar affair, please be wise, Barcelona are into the Champions league final by default and as the internaional gaming board and court of arbitration are looking into the possibility of outside interest in the refereeing scandal against Chelsea, we may yet see, a final that never will be. As if the ruling finds in Chelsea's favour and they might after FIFA have sacked the referee and his officials for suspected foul play, we might see MAN UTD crowned rightful champions without even kicking a ball. Even if the final does take place, Barcelona have a very slim chance of beating Manchester Utd. Also, the Super Cup is another money spinner. It's a waste to the fans, and most of the clubs take it as awamr up game!
UEFA Super Cup- Barca vs. Shaktar
britain is in europe, thus british football is european football -- i agree with ben that the rest of europe never needed english football, though.
svaka čast, darijo!!!!
European and internationals have always been boring most of the time rare as hens teeth to find many good games. domestic football has it all even the playoffs and relagation battles. We never needed european football only the greedy would entertain such fixtures. If you have to have european football watch arsenal they pretty much complete in that department cept they boring when they play init
Alan G i believe you are totally wrong and you should consider your thoughts.
And Spurs should have beaten them with their Reserve side out there... sad they didn't field a stronger team back then, but it reflects well on the squad and how Spurs should perform next season. Well done Shakhtar, even if you were amazingly jammy along the way...
