Jeffries to rest Killie stars

Thu 21 May, 03:48 PM

Jim Jefferies will turn to his fringe players for Kilmarnock's final game of the season now the club are safe from the threat of relegation.

Killie face Motherwell at Fir Park in the only final-weekend fixture in the Premier League which does not have anything riding on it.

He will rest Kevin Kyle and Alan Combe, who have both been playing with injuries in recent weeks while Kilmarnock were involved in the battle to stay up. Back-up goalkeeper Damien Rascle is set to deputise between the sticks, while midfielder Iain Flannigan will make his first start of the season.

Jeffries said: "Alan Combe and Kevin Kyle have niggling injuries. They've been patched up recently so they won't play. Damien will play in goal.

"The players that come in will be fresh and want to show what they can do. I think it could be a big year for some of them next season like Iain Flannigan.

"Iain's been unlucky this season. I felt he lacked that little bit of strength but he's got stronger and he's shown that in training. So I think next season will be a big one for him. He's deserving of a chance against Motherwell. Whenever he's come in, he's shown he's well capable and he'll have a part to play here in the years ahead."
