La Liga - Coupet set for Atletico switch

France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet has reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to join the Spanish club on a three-year-contract.

Coupet, 35, said last month he was leaving French champions Lyon, who have since purchased Hugo Lloris from Ligue 1 rivals Nice.

Lyon and Atletico still need to sort out financial details and a deal could be announced over the next couple of days, according to French sports daily L'Equipe. Lyon were unavailable for immediate comment.

Coupet announced his desire to leave Lyon at the end of the season, having won seven Ligue 1 winners' medals in his time at the club.

He succeeded Fabien Barthez as first-choice goalkeeper for the French national side in 2006, but endured a disappointing Euro 2008 as France were eliminated at the group stage without winning a game.

  1. He started to play good veeeeery late. He can play 2 years at most on high level and after that retire
