Chief executive Keith Lamb believes that Middlesbrough-born defender David Wheater is pivotal to the club's revival plans.
Despite Boro's relegation from the Premier League Wheater, who has two years remaining on his contract at the Riverside, has vowed to stay and help the club regain its top-flight status.
And Lamb insists the 22-year-old centre-half has a big part to play in that.
"We are looking forward to David becoming the cornerstone of our defence in future years," he told the Evening Gazette.
"We are absolutely delighted that David has come out publicly and said that he is staying at Middlesbrough.
"We have a fight on our hands and David is up for the fight."
Wheater is currently recovering from a knee operation but will be fit for the start of the Championship campaign on August 8.

lol. Uwe fuchs!! Whatever happened to him? 'U-we Fuuuuuchs ah ha....' lol I think he only came on loan for a bit didn't? I can't remember how many he scored but I remember him being quite a strong, pacy striker. We loved him in the Holgate!!
wish Bernie was involved at the club, perhaps his enthusiasm would rub off on the players
Way da go Wheater, but i dont think he is a championship player. He deserves to play for a better manager than Southgate.
