Bastareaud heads home after attack

France team doctors have confirmed centre Mathieu Bastareaud suffered a suspected broken eye socket and needed four stitches in his cheek after being attacked following Les Bleus' defeat to New Zealand.

Bastareaud was returning to the team hotel in Wellington when he was set upon by a gang in the city centre, hours after the All Blacks had levelled the two-match series with a 14-10 win. The 20-year-old is now on his way back to France where further tests will be carried out.

"We offered to have him stay until the end of the tour with us, but he preferred to go back to France and go back to his family," said France team spokesman Lionel Rossigneux. "It's a sad story I'm afraid."

Rossigneux confirmed Bastareaud was not going to report the incident to the police as he didn't think he would be able to identify his attackers.

"By the time he went back to the hotel, we phoned the team doctor and the team doctor gave him four stitches, what would be the point in calling the police?" added Rossigneux. "In the end there wouldn't be any way to find the people involved.

"When we were talking with him and asking him if he could give a description, he said 'No, I didn't even know there were four or five. They just came quickly upon me and hit me... and I didn't have time to realise what happened'."

NZRU chief executive Steve Tew was shocked at the attack and offered his sympathies.

"(It's) not good for New Zealand. I'm sure the whole country would join me in sending our apologies to him," Tew told RNZ.

Bastareaud will now miss Saturday's Test against Australia in Sydney.

  1. Lol, all you guys saying how violent new zealand is, he was drunk and tripped smashing his face, he said he got attacked because he knew that the management would be pissed off at him for getting drunk and injuring himself. CCTV footage showed him walk into the hotel completely un harmed with no attackers in sight

  2. NZ is not the safe place they like to pretend it is! I would say it was rugby related. The number of rapes and assaults is huge but covered up. Check the stats. If they don't
get them on the field they will off. Remember the Lion's visit?

  3. Personally I don't agree with you because this attack is far for being the only problem French Team encountered in NZ.

Of course UK journalists haven't spoke too much about the bottles thrown on players after their victory in Dunedin, and I was really surprised to hear NZ fans whistling French players trying conversions!!!

Fortunately, in France and Europe we are not used to those problems which are more soccer related and their hooligans, rugby is for us a sport of respect and good fighting spirit.

And I think those problems are really questionable 2 years before 2011 Rugby World Cup...

And as usual, how courageous you need to be to assault a guy alone when you are a group of four or five people...

  4. Probably not rugby related . Wrong place wrong time . Any real NZ fan would respect an opponent . Hope to see him ( basteraud ) in Cardiff in 2010 6Nations .
