McCarthy backs Vokes to shine

Mon 21 Jul, 06:30 PM

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy was impressed by Sam Vokes as the striker made his debut in Wanderers' defeat of Dundee.Vokes, a summer signing from Bournemouth, had been ruled out of the pre-season games at Wrexham and Hereford through injury but made his bow during the 1-0 win at Dens Park.

"It was great to see Sam play at last. He is a real handful, but he is not just a big lad for 18 he also has a football brain and knows where the back of the net is," McCarhty told the club's official website.

"He had an effort disallowed but I never saw anything wrong with it, and he proved he has got an eye for goal by being in the right place at the right time.

"He will provide competition for the other strikers. Make no mistake, Sam will be pushing for a starting place straight away.

"We are going to need all four strikers if we are going to challenge the best teams."
