Pele Warning For Rooney

Mon 21 Jul, 10:09 AM

Pele has warned Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney that he must learn to control his temper if he is to become a world class player.

Rooney has been criticised for his aggressive approach in United's 1-1 draw with South African outfit Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

The England striker received a yellow card for a rash challenge on Tinashe Nengomashe, while Onismor Bhasera claims he was elbowed.

And Brazilian legend Pele believes Rooney, who was substituted after one hour, must learn to control his physical approach in order to reproduce his form of four years ago.

"I like Wayne Rooney, but he hasn't reached the peak of Euro 2004 again," said Pele.

"He had two or three very good years and then lost a little bit in his performances. I don't know why.

"When he's tangling with opponents, Rooney has to learn how to defend himself - not attack the opponent.

"If you can protect yourself against challenges, it will be easier to keep your temper.

"It should be possible because referees also help strikers now.

"Once a defender gets a yellow card, he knows one more tackle could see him sent off so they don't make another bad challenge."

  3. Green Giant, you are a classic imbecile.Pele can live off whatever he wants when it comes to football. He was the greatest footballer in the world for many years & won 3 World cups. What other credentials does he need to make comments about highly overrated Wayne"spit the dummy"Rooney?????

  6. Rooney is an authentic flop... KING PELE had the chance to play with players like Garrincha, Jairzinho, Tostao to name a few and they were players with lots of hability and able to create chances for the KING himself or score from whatever the KING would create. Now,what is Rooney`s game all about??? He is not a creater nor his he a natural goal scorer (like Berbatov for example); he plays surrounded by a very good team full of world class players and yet the only thing that he can do is use muscles to push or knock down players, use elbows, stamp on them balls(Carvalhos as an exemp.), etc, etc and by doing so he scores one goal here or there particularly at home were it is more difficult for the ref to blow the whistle every time Rooney goes for the ball...But Pele should take in consideration that (agression)is part of Rooneys game-die hard Man. Utd . fans comments- my would be:take that away from His game and the man is left whith nothing...

  7. King Pele is considered a legend of all times. Rooney is not much a great player compare to other great players like C. Ronaldo (even in Man U.) I suggest Rooney needs more a psychological/mental development than physical/practical skills. Rooney is too young 4 such a behaviour, this character is common to players who loose fate in football like Anelka, etc.

  8. the fact is that all man u fans will back rooney and the die hard england fans even if he is a bad player. is torres was playing for man u and was english and rooney was spainsih and playing for liverpool it would be the l;iverpool fans backing him and thats the fact of football fans are fickle

  10. Opowickz listen, Football is meant to be a beautiful game, But sadly that concept I think is lacking 4rm a lot of modern day english footballers. To make it beautiful u need brains, which is why a lot of players tend to rely on other attributes(aggression) to make up for what they're lacking.. its quite simple really. Hopefully Mr Capello Can instill some of mentality that saw the Italians lift da world cup (miracles do happen).

  11. Rooney or Torres? All the loyal MAN URE fans ranting on about what Rooney has won last year... Rooney won nothing, his very boring team did. Torres only scored the euro2k8 winner and picked up THAT trophy. And he was by far the most exciting/entertaining player in the prem.
Where was the entertainment from Rooney last year? where the goals?
    speak b4 u think, ariiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight!!
Whom would Pele rate the highest?
In fact whom would 99% of the WORLD rate the better player for skill, goalscoring ability, (looks?...shrek4 v prince charming? mmmm?) entertainment value, as a role model for todays youth, etc etc.??
    Sorted! ARIIIIIIGHT?

  12. only reason Rooney is who he is today is because England filled the EX everton sub with so much confidance after his wonder goals Euro 2004 -- now since Ronaldo HAS stolen the lime light (big headed mofo now as well by the way) he is an angry boxer lookin dodger - no support from his fans has slowed the adrenelin junkie down....

  13. Unfortunately for Mr Rooney he has the brains of a Brussel sprout (Not really fair on the Brussel sprout) and the looks, as everyone knows, of Shrek. And his woman who is absolutely nothing striking, has learnt to ride on his back. Where does it end !!!!. I'm sure his money can buy him out of the Backstreets!! - for a while!!. Like Gazza he may not stay there long - if we're lucky. As he is an ugly little devil it's unlikely we are going to have to put up with his face blazened all over like Beckham.

  15. to darren w :you obviosly do not know anything about football rooney 's passionate and a bit agressive but hey i like that more than players who run around like ballerinas and rooney for beeing such a fysical player is a fantastic footballer
you are probably a @#$% chelsea fan who just jealous of the fact that rooney 10times better than joe cole or frank lampard
and if your not you are still a nobhead

  16. Rooney has no idea of what makes a footballer great. It's not his striking ability. It's not even his goal making ability. It's his ability to do both of these - and accept that you can't win every ball. Understand the nature of the game. To kick a player from behind (or elbow him in the air) is not football. Go back to school Baby Wayne and learn - Yes from the likes of Pele, Best, Moore and the other really great, properly educated players.

  18. Rooney is an ugly little scum bag like gazza and he knows it too. Rooney has surrounded himself with shallow people outside football life in an attempt to hide his disadvantaged upbringing, but he cant shake his past and its coming back to bite him. His pride is going to be his downfall and ive no pity for him

  19. I'm getting sick of this.
Rooney scored 12 goals in 23 starts last season he scored 4/12 in the Champions league. He was injured on 4 seperate occasions last season including a broken foot. Come on, what player would have an amazing season under those circumstances??
I don't hear anybody saying Drogba has lost it because he only scored 8 league goals last season.
