Championship - Wright returns to Tractor Boys

Eurosport - Mon, 21 Jul 15:56:00 2008

Richard Wright has completed his return to Ipswich Town after signing a two-year contract.

FOOTBALL 2007-2008 Premier League West Ham Richard Wright - 0

The 30-year-old goalkeeper rejoins the club where he began his career from West Ham for an undisclosed fee.

The Suffolk-born custodian left the club seven years ago when he joined Arsenal in a £6 million move after making 240 appearances for Ipswich between 1994 and 2001 and helping the club qualify for the Uefa Cup in his final season.

That summer he also earned the second of just two England caps, coming on as a second-half substitute in a friendly against Netherlands, having made his only international start the previous summer against Malta.

Wright only stayed at Highbury for one season, however, and after making 22 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, keeping eight clean sheets, he was sold to Everton for £3.5 million.

After spending five years at Everton, for the most part either on the bench or the treatment table, Wright joined West Ham on a free transfer, and he spent the final two months of last season on loan at Southampton.

  1. I agree with Ipswichnic, wrighty can't be blamed for wanting to ply his trade at Arsenal. Ronaldo wants to leave united when theyve just won the champions league! they are all the same, what about Kelvin Davis?

Hopefully Wrighty has developed his skills through his exposure to other coaches, managers etc elsewhere and comes back to us a better player. Yes its a shame for Supple but we need the competition and we need someone good in goal, we should welcome him back and be positive, I think its going to be a great season and I'm starting to get excited. Come on you blues! Loyalgreenkinger

  2. With a decent first team run i think we could see the best years of wrightys career at pr.I do feel for Shane as i felt he was a little hard done by last season but lets be honest we need more than one recognised first team keeper in our squad and what is wrong with healthy competition?
As for if it was wrong of wrighty to leave when he did only he could answer that. From a fans point of view i feel another season at town could have made all the difference for his career path-and i honestly believe we would have stayed up that year with him in goal.Give him a chance and welcome him back, positivity is what we need pre season theres plenty of time to be negative ahead.

  3. I am inclined to agree with Donna & Neil!!!
We got rid of a lot of Players when they were on the way Up and we are now getting them back on the way Down.
How must young Shane feel to be second best again?

  4. He was worth 25 points in the promotion season. And hardly to be blamed at wanting to have a shot at assuming the expected-to-be-retiring Seaman's mantle at Arsenal when he went - he had, after all, just had a blinding season that finished Town in pretty much the best position EVER of any club of our size has had in the Premiership since it really got going post Euro '96 (still in for the Champions League on final day with only 3 places available - makes Reading, Wigan etc. look underachievers).

It's never really worked out for either though has it? Wright flopped, and Town ended up getting the hapless Norwich secret-agent Marshall along with the big-headed Sereni which sealed our fate. But with Wrighty hitting the age when goalkeepers come into their own, I'll be behind his homecoming and hoping he can do it all again!...

  5. The man that left the club for glory.. at a time when Ipswich could have proceeded even further. I don't think that true ITFC fans will give him a big welcome back..sold to Arsenal for good money, Now nobody wants him, why have we got him back, TRACTOR TRAITOR, his atitude has always been wrong SELFISH AND CERTAINLY NOT A TEAM PLAYER, with Arsenal and Everton. Sorry 2 wrongs don't make a "wright". I hope the club will still support young Supple as he has done his bit. It would be a shame if he is now reduced to the bench, passion for the club and giving 110% is the vital link to ITFC's progress
