Tim Bresnan's best figures of the season saw Yorkshire reduce Nottinghamshire to 101 for five before bad light ended play on a weather-hit first day in the County Championship at Scarborough.
The England fast bowler finished with four for 41 as Yorkshire went in search of their first win of the summer and the only resistance came from Australian David Hussey, who hit an unbeaten 59 from 76 balls.
Yorkshire were without overseas paceman Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who has been called up by Pakistan for their series of five one-day internationals and one Twenty20 game in Sri Lanka.
Wicketkeeper Gerard Brophy returned to the side after recovering from a hand injury and Deon Kruis took over from Ajmal Shahzad who is suffering from a hamstring strain.
A combination of rain and bad light delayed the start until 12.30pm and Nottinghamshire were soon left wondering whether it had been wise to bat first on winning the toss.
Matthew Hoggard and Bresnan posed problems with seam and swing and Notts had lost both openers with only 15 scored, Matthew Wood edging Bresnan to Adil Rashid at third slip and Bilal Shafayat falling lbw to Hoggard.
Bresnan switched ends to relieve Hoggard, and it became 33 for three as Mark Wagh chased a loose delivery and Brophy held on to an athletic catch diving to his right.
The only batsman to find things to his liking was Hussey, who drove Hoggard for an early four before twice finding the boundary through extra cover off Kruis.
Hussey was 15 and Samit Patel eight at lunch but murky weather kept the players indoors after the interval and dampness and poor light prevented a re-start until 4.25pm when Bresnan once again posed most of the problems with another sharp burst of bowling, his second delivery of the session being edged by Patel to Joe Sayers at second slip.
Hussey, however, continued to punish anything loose, driving Bresnan for consecutive boundaries and scoring freely whenever Kruis's line strayed.
Another edge, this time by Alistair Brown to Rashid at third slip, brought Bresnan his first four-wicket haul of the season, but Hussey went to his 50 in the grand manner by straight driving Rashid for six, his runs coming off 71 balls with 10 other boundaries, including one from an overthrow.
With 34 overs gone, the light closed in again to end play for the day.
Most of the other County Championship matches were washed out.
