Brown: Tigers must look forward

Thu 21 Aug, 06:00 PM

Hull manager Phil Brown has warned his side they must put their opening-day win behind them and concentrate on their game against Blackburn. The Tigers celebrated the first top-flight fixture in their 104-year history with a dramatic late win over Fulham at the KC Stadium in last weekend's Barclays Premier League curtain-raiser, but manager Brown insists they cannot dwell on that success too long.

Blackburn, who caused a lesser upset of their own by beating Everton last time out, are next up at Ewood Park on Saturday and Brown wants his players to focus their attentions on Rovers.

"It was a massive boost for us (to beat Fulham)," said Brown, whose side defied the expectations of many pundits to join West Brom and Stoke in graduating from the Championship last season.

"After three minutes we missed a great chance, after eight minutes we were 1-0 down and after 20 minutes I thought it could be a really bad day because Fulham were playing that well.

"To get an equaliser and go on to win with our fitness levels showed great character.

"But that's firmly behind us now - it's all about looking forward. We came back in on Monday and it was all about focusing on Blackburn."

City nevertheless remain among the favourites to return to the Championship, but Brown refuses to entertain the idea his team should go into matches with low expectations.

"We went into Saturday's game fully expecting to get something from Fulham and Blackburn is another opportunity to get something," he said.

"I'm not bothered about what other people think, it's more about what I think, what the staff think and what the players think.

"We know what we are capable of and if we achieve that, we'll be okay this season."

Hull had four men away on international duty during the week - less than many of their rivals - and Brown was pleased to have some extra time to work with his squad.

He added: "It's nice not to have a midweek fixture to be honest because I think it takes a good week's work to plan for a game.

"And this week it has been important for us to look ahead, not back.

"What I'm trying to drill home to the lads is that Fulham is gone now, but I think we have learned from that match.

"We learned there will be times when the opposition play better football than us, times when they have a time of it. But there'll be times when we have a time of it and when we do we have to score goals."
