Lewis completes move to Galaxy

Thu 21 Aug, 10:00 PM

Bruce Arena began his overhaul of Los Angeles Galaxy by trading high-earning striker Carlos Ruiz to Toronto and snapping up winger Eddie Lewis.By selling Ruiz, Arena - who took over as Galaxy head coach and general manager on Monday - frees up significant space under the salary cap to reorganise his roster.

Arena instantly spent some of the freed up money by signing Lewis, who returns home after a length spell in England with Fulham, Preston, Leeds and Derby.

Lewis joined The Rams last year, but the winger-come left-back was unable to prevent Derby suffering a swift return to the Championship.

The 34-year-old has now left England in order to join The Galaxy, who in turn have been forced to trade Ruiz in order to make room for Lewis on their 18-man roster.

"I strongly believe that Eddie Lewis will be an outstanding addition to the Galaxy," Galaxy general manager and head coach Bruce Arena told the club's official website.

"He brings great experience to the club and will be a wonderful addition to our locker room and is a player that the fans are sure to support. I have known Eddie for a number of years, I rate him as a first class player and person and I'm honoured to welcome him to the Galaxy family.
